After the festival is before the festival. Just as this imaginative painting by Christian Schad, that shows Clemens Brentano in midst of his creatures, we will allways baer in mind the heritage of Clemens Brentano and his time and his family and companions like Bettina Brentano, Achim von Arnim, Wilhelm Müller, Luise Hensel, Wilhelm and F***y Hensel etc.

Some rehearsal and concert snapshots. The opening concert of our festival with this year's theme "Brentano and Italy" was Hugo Wolfs "Italienisches Liederbuch" performed by Natalie Perez, Konstantin Krimmel and Daniel Heide.

We closed the festival with a multifaced concert yesterday. I had the pleasure and honor to share the stage with Sophie Pacini for the first half (photos yet to come) and then enjoyed the company of two dear friends, Johannes Held and Bryan Benner. Our 2 1/2 hour long concert was all about "Sehnsucht nach Italien" and we presented piano music and art songs from Beethoven, Schubert, F***y and Felix Mendelssohn, Schumann, Liszt, Chopin, Bellini, Donizetti, Puccini, Verdi and also traditional neapolitan folksongs.

As a surprise guest we were thrilled to present a phenomenal soprano from the Ukraine, Yuliia Pinchuk, who got standing ovations for her "Sempre libera" from La Traviata.

This stunning stage is our main performance venue during the festival. This year we presented artsong and piano recitals, a staged fairytale narration and a poetry slam at the Stadttheater, built in 1811 under Karl Theodor von Dalberg. The school Dalberg Gymnasium by the way was our cooperation partner for three creative workshops: love letters, fairy tale illustrations and musical performances.
The atmosphere and acoustics are simply incredible. Evry whispering is audible, guitar without amplification, moderation without microphone. A truly perfect place to interact with the audience in the closest and most intense way one can imagine.

The wonderful extra: my son Johann, 11 years old, joined us during those days with his young spirit and also performed during the recitals.

The story behind it: we presented the song DER SPINNERIN NACHTLIED by Louise Reichardt and also by Ludwig Thuille. The first one is composed like a folksong the second an unfortunately unknown masterpiece of late romantic artsong.

Through Ulrike Kienzles input we learned that the poem is an excerpt from Brentanos "Aus der Chronicka eines fahrenden Schülers". A son has been hearing his mother singing a song of a nightingale and the moon and her lost love for many nights and now is lying in his bed and singing it himself.

And yes, the father was as nervous as him. I understand my own father a little better know.

This is one of our working spaces. We are currently creating a scholarship programm for creative minds of all kind at our Künstlerhaus. During our festival last week we hosted a group of 6 students from Munich, Weimar and Stuttgart for a workshop who worked around Clemens Brentano and his life and poetry and varied music from three centuries.

The young artists worked together with specialist for romantic art, linguist and musicologist Dr. Ulrike Kienzle, from the pianist, composer and teacher Rudi Spring and from the vocal coach Felice Venanzoni.
We cooperated with Deutsches Romantik Frankfurt, Freies Deutsches Hochstift, Goethehaus Frankfurt and Konzerthaus Blaibach

We did it!

During the last week we presented a new festival for the wonderful City of Aschaffenburg.
We offered Artsong and Piano recitals, storytelling, exhibitions, excursions and workshops for students, youths and also smaller kids. We saw whole families coming to our concerts as well as singles, couples, friends. We had space for a baby and for people in wheelchairs. Our audience laughed, thought, learned, dreamed, cried, smiled and wondered. We traveled together to Italy and invited Italy to us through music, literature, dance, poetry, fairy tales, sculptures and paintings.

We are the and we are proudly considering ourselves as one of many young and new festivals in Germany and Europe dealing with past, present and future through the arts.

Thanks to our wonderful artists! Thanks to our curious audience!
Thanks to the City of Aschaffenburg and its Kulturamt!
