Els Devrieze

Els Devrieze Belgian visual artist creating abstract paintings that explore presence, perception, and the traces that shape our experience of the world.

[www.elsdevrieze.com](http://www.elsdevrieze.com) If you can think of it, I can draw it! I’m a woman on a mission. Through drawings, artwork and illustrations I translate your imagination to a piece of paper, canvas or into a digital illustration. From small drawings that brighten your text to full-colour-two-page-spreads,
from sketches for a birth announcement to an

artistic invitation to a 100th birthday party. From a line drawing to a realistic portrait. Tailormade at an honest price. With room for uplifting feedback to create the most wonderful illustration. All I need is your trust, your story and your dream. If you can share it, I can draw it!

Some artists inspire you because you admire their technique.

Others because they make you feel something you can’t quite explain.

Eva Hesse is one of those artists for me.

There has always been something in her work that draws me in. A quiet darkness. A vulnerability. A tension between fragility and strength.

I’ve always been fascinated by the darker side of human emotion—not as something to fear, but as something deeply human.

Her work reminds me that art doesn’t always need to provide answers.

Sometimes it simply gives shape to feelings that are difficult to put into words.

That’s the kind of work that stays with you.

Isn’t it sad?

Over the past two days, two unexpected opportunities landed in my inbox.

Both genuine. Both exciting.

And both times, my first reaction wasn’t excitement.

It was suspicion.

Is this real?
What’s the catch?
Is this another scam?

And that made me think about how strange it is that this has become such a normal part of being an artist online.

Someone compliments your work? You’re cautious.

Someone wants to buy a painting? You check their profile.

Someone offers you an opportunity? You start investigating before allowing yourself to feel excited.

Of course, being careful is necessary. There are far too many people deliberately targeting artists.

But isn’t it sad that somewhere along the way, doubt became the first response to something good?

I’m very glad that this time, I kept reading.

And maybe I’ll be able to share more about both opportunities soon. 🤍

There are artists who change the way you paint.

And there are artists who change the way you see.

Rachel Whiteread belongs to the second group.

Her work taught me that absence isn’t empty. That silence can hold meaning. That what is left behind can be just as powerful as what is visible.

She didn’t influence my style.

She influenced my way of looking.

She reminded me that space, light and the traces we leave behind can carry as much emotion as the objects themselves.

That idea continues to resonate with me every time I step into the studio.

Thank you, Rachel, for changing the way I see.

Every series starts with a whisper.

Before there are finished paintings…

…there are traces.

Layers.

Reflections.

Surfaces that slowly begin to reveal what they want to become.

These are the first glimpses of Sediments of Light.

More to come

Sometimes the most productive thing an artist can do…

…is leave the studio.

I used to think every day away from painting was a day lost.

Now I know these moments are part of the work too.

Enjoying the sun on my face.
Spending time with my family.
Recharging my batteries.

Collecting light.
Collecting quiet moments.
Collecting new ways of seeing.

Inspiration comes when life happens.

Not every artist who inspires you does so from a distance.

Some inspire you by simply being there.

By celebrating your successes as if they were their own.
By giving honest feedback when you need it.
By encouraging you to keep going when self-doubt gets loud.
By reminding you that there is room for all of us.
art and .schuur.mans are two of those artists for me.

Art can sometimes feel like a solitary path, but I’ve learned that the right people make that path a little less lonely.

Thank you both for your generosity, your honesty and your encouragement.

I’m grateful our paths crossed.

I don’t stop being an artist when I leave the studio.

Every trip becomes a collection of colours, textures, light, conversations and small observations.

This is everything I take with me to capture those moments.

The last slide is my everyday companion—a miniature sketchbook and pencil case that rarely leave my bag.

Here’s to new places, quiet moments and unexpected inspiration.
