It was summertime. My mother used to keep all my clothes in a large wooden chest in our room. Since it was the school holidays, I had gotten into an argument with my father for not studying.
I must have been around seven years old. In a burst of determination, I started taking clothes out of the chest and stuffing them into a bag. My mother noticed what I was doing and looked at me in surprise. She came over and asked, “What are you doing?”
I replied confidently, “I’m leaving this house.”
She smiled and asked, “Where will you go?”
The only place I knew was my maternal grandmother’s house, so with all the confidence in the world, I proudly said, “To Nani’s house!”
Those really were such innocent, unforgettable days.
