Very happy to share that Komorebi Consort won the Audience prize at the FestiVita concours!

While we're preparing to play at the Banquet later today, I would like to share this lovely picture that Malou Van den Heuvel took yesterday after our show.

Thanks to everyone who voted for us! You were the best audience ❤️

17/Jan/2026: Another conversation with Sigiswald Kuijken

“Our generations have lost an important heritage – it helps tremendously to recognise poetical rhythm patterns even in instrumental compositions, dances, as well as “free” sonata-pieces…!”

In the beginning, we all planned to visit the master himself in Kortrijk. Sigiswald, however, offered to pop on the train to visit us instead – the only condition was that we gather as many young musicians as we can. In the end, we managed to cram fifteen people from all over Europe into our tiny flat in Brussels. What followed was an intense few hours getting to grips with the text of the cantata “Was frag ich nach der Welt” by J.S. Bach and translating this knowledge to our performance. Beers, of course, followed – the great master in heaven himself would certainly have approved of this (see “The Bach Reader”).

The idea that music must always serve the text was already very much in the air in Bach’s time. Many of today can recall by heart a cantata aria without having the faintest clue what it is about. Approaching this music from the words alone, however, proves to be a most enriching experience. We look forward to bringing to you the results of our work in the near future.

Thank you once again to Sigiswald and to everyone who joined – stay tuned for our future events!

Exactly one year ago, on the 27th of March 2024, more than five-hundred people gathered in Sablon to hear our very first concert and to mark the tricentenary of J.S. Bach’s “Johannes-Passion”. This project was, for many of our musicians, the very first contact with the “Passion”, and one that attuned us to the expressive power Bach bestowed to the text through his compositional artistry, a discovery that helped us understand the emotional, rhetorical, and, above all, human dimensions of his musical language. Each instrumentalist became as aware of the text as the singers, and the beginning of the final chorale came with a collective emotional sensation I still cannot quite fathom to this day.

Just one year before that, I was at the harpsichord in my small flat in Brussels playing and singing the work from the score with a string tied around my big left toe and contra-G to replicate the full ensemble texture of “Herr, unser Herrscher” – Brussels, I feel, has this mystical ability to allow beautiful things to come out of the most modest ideas. Looking back, it seems almost miraculous to me that such a project flourished with absolutely no money involved at all – these days, since our second and third projects, we are beginning to realise how precious that first project really was. The unbelievable kindness of our supporters and mentors including Sigiswald, as well as that of our wonderfully attentive and enthusiastic audience is still fuelling our desire to continue this work – we thank you all for your support and very much look forward to bringing you more. Did you know that organising a concert is so much more than just playing the music? In fact, it takes an incredible amount of work behind the scenes… But when it all comes together and the audience is happy, it fills us with warmth and keeps us going for the upcoming challenges that maintaining an ensemble brings.

At the moment we are working hard on the preparations for our next Johannes-Passion in Italy on 15/3, but stay tuned for another exciting project in April that we’ll be announcing soon!

Komorebi Consort wishes you all a very merry Christmas!!🎄A few pictures from Sunday and the rehearsals while we wait for the official photos from the event…

We had the great pleasure of playing “Advenire” twice in two weeks - two different settings with very different acoustics & with a fantastic and warm audience each time. 💙

Some behind the scenes pictures & some taken during the concert in Brussels:

1/ and 2/ stalling the setup for the instruments & mics and deciding where each musician will be placed (always takes a few tries)

3/ Some of our wonderful helpers for the concert 💪

4/ and 5/ Concert time! 😍

Save the Date!

• Saturday, December 14th, 19:30 – OLV-ter-Bijstand Church, Lozer
• Sunday, December 22nd, 15:00 – Église Notre-Dame du Sablon, Brussels

After the success of our very first project in March at the Église Notre-Dame-au-Sablon in Brussels – performing Bach’s St. John Passion – we’re thrilled to invite you to our upcoming concerts this December. We’ll be performing a programme centered around Advent and Christmas cantatas by C. Graupner, J.S. Bach, and the Fifth Brandenburg Concerto by the same composer, and more.

Looking back on the St. John Passion, we feel so grateful for the incredible support we received. The performance was a special moment for us, especially being joined by Sigiswald Kuijken, who not only coached us but also played alongside us as concertmaster.
The positive reception was beyond anything we expected, and we couldn’t have asked for a more encouraging start. As we prepare for these next concerts, we’re looking forward to sharing this new programme with you, filled with festive and inspiring music. We hope you’ll join us for what promises to be another memorable set of performances.

For more details or booking inquiries, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
