Spring is in the air...
Coffee, anyone? With milk or sugar? Come closer, gather around this cozy table. Linger for a moment and enjoy the cool shade offered by the apple tree. It is sheer bliss to spend time in the garden on such a beautiful summer’s day. The green grass is lush and soft, sunbeams dance among the flowers, the branches are swollen with ripe fruit. All is well, so take a seat.
In 1901, De Smet settled in Sint-Martens-Latem, the painters' village along the river Lys. It was here that his unique interpretation of luminism unfolded. He became a prominent member of Vie et lumière, a group formed around 1904 by Emile Claus, Georges Morren, and Adriaan Jozef Heymans united by a shared ambition to “paint light” – an aim masterfully realized in "Garden Table" (ca. 1910).
