CIRKLABO is een artist-centered circuswerkplaats in Leuven, waar de ontwikkeling van de circuskunsten centraal staat.

Jaarlijks organiseert CIRKLABO en 30 CC het circusfestival CIRKL. Bij CIRKLABO zetten we de circussector in de kijker op zowel nationaal als internationaal vlak. Inspelend op ontwikkelingen binnen het circusveld, Leuven en de maatschappij, stimuleert CIRKLABO artistieke verdieping van de circuskunst, voornamelijk rond de thema’s interdisciplinariteit binnen en buiten de kunsten, nieuwstedelijkheid en digitale technologie. Niet-productiegericht experiment, uitwisseling en praktijkreflectie vormen de basispijlers van de werkplaats.

Goed nieuws voor wie Cirque Composé al op de radar heeft. Tijdens Rode Hond cureren Sien Van Acker en Ramona Van Nieuwenhove ook de voorstelling Circus!. Vanuit hun eigenzinnige, kleurrijke universum stellen ze een circusprogramma samen waarin speelsheid, verwondering en licht absurde logica centraal staan.

We brought Research Labs 2026 to an end with a public sharing. Time to tell you a little more about the projects after three weeks of artistic research, experimentation and exchange.

Griet is a Belgian artist working across visual art and circus. With their self-made sound suit, they explores how we relate to sound, visual overstimulation and one another.

Who or what can NOI Suit become? And what can an audience become in relation to the work? Allies? Accomplices? Creators? Griet was taking these questions into the street and into the Predikherenkerk, exploring interaction, participation, space and the possibility of simply trying things out.

Jenni De Hertogh specializes in juggling. Her balls are still at the very beginning of their journey and she is curious about where they might go

One chair, three balls. Do you see what you did not see yet? There is much more behind a simple chair. And those 3 balls carry much more than a soft red shell and silicone. Jenni juggles, 1-2-3 balls. Together they try to find a (smooth) path through space and time.

“The general theme of Research Labs was space. For me space defines a place where I can play and try out. Feel connected, or not. To give more meaning to who- or whatever is in it.”

Chiara brings performance, dance, circus and parkour into a practice interested in intimacy, feminism and space. Merel works with textiles, video, costumes and wearable installations to explore people, nature and consumerism.

Their research brings together movement, performance, textiles, objects and materials. What happens when these things meet? What happens when a camping tent stops being a camping tent? A tent might become a prop. An object might change the way a body moves. An audience might become part of the space.

Based in Vienna, movement artist Seda works across vertical aerial acrobatics, contortion and hand balancing. Her practice grows from curiosity, dedication and a constant search for deeper artistic expression.

She was exploring the inbetweenness of growing up with two contrary cultures. Through movement, her exploration focuses on what it means to belong to multiple worlds, while never being fully recognized by either.

Terugblik try-out | Tyr Auf

Fenja Barteldres gaat in Tyr Auf op zoek naar hoe verborgen patronen ons blijven vormen, zelfs wanneer we ze rationeel weten te herkennen.

Ze onderzoekt deze spanning vanuit haar relatie met het Cyr wheel en ontmantelt dit perfect ronde wiel, waarmee ze bewust ingaat tegen de logica van haar discipline. Het Cyr wheel wordt een tegenspeler, een obstakel en een metafoor. Met humor en ironie daagt ze niet alleen de conventies van het circus uit, maar ook bredere ideeën over schoonheid, normen en macht.

Open Ends | Research Labs

Six circus artists from Research Labs will open up their work to the public. Don’t expect finished performances, but rather a glimpse into a process filled with fragments, experiments, questions and discoveries.

An invitation to experience what can emerge when an idea is still open and has yet to take shape.

We leren hoe we ons horen te gedragen, wat mooi is en welke emoties gepast zijn. Maar wat als we stoppen met deze ingesleten patronen te volgen en de regels opnieuw uitvinden?

Fenja daagt de logica van het Cyr wheel uit en speelt met verwachtingen, perspectieven en betekenissen. Wat we denken te kennen, krijgt een andere vorm. Een speelse ontmoeting van virtuositeit, humor en verbeelding.

𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗠𝗢𝗟𝗘 - 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗿𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘇𝗮

Twee weken lang werkte Carla aan de voorstelling met bijzondere aandacht voor de communicatie tussen performer en publiek: wat komt over bij een publiek dat voor het eerst met het werk in aanraking komt, en waar is nog verfijning nodig?

- Een vrouw in haar slaapkamer. Ze heeft besloten een einde aan haar leven te maken. Maar die avond werkt de dood simpelweg niet mee. Carla Margarita Manrique maakt een eigenzinnige voorstelling over zelfmoord, humor en de dunne lijn tussen leven en dood. Een mix van lezing, horror, clowneske getuigenis en een endoscopische reis.

During their two-week residency with us, the team continued developing the performance, with a particular focus on communication between performer and audience: what comes across to an audience encountering the work for the first time, and where does it still need refining?

- A woman in her bedroom. She has decided to end her life. But that evening, death simply refuses to cooperate. Carla Margarita Manrique creates an idiosyncratic performance about su***de, humour and the thin line between life and death. A mix of lecture, horror, clownesque testimony and endoscopic journey.
