BAC ART LAB is a workspace for contemporary art at KU Leuven, which provides space for creation, pre BAC ART LAB is a centre for art and science.

BAC ART LAB is a multidisciplinary environment and is open to students and staff members of the KU Leuven Association who work in the visual and audio-visual arts, performing arts, sound art, and design. BAC ART LAB seeks to create space for talent development, exchange, and experimentation. It focuses on artistic trajectories at the intersection of art and research. It provides a home for new edu

cational methods that combine theory and practice. BAC ART LAB is based at the former Institute of Bacteriology on Vital Decosterstraat. An exceptional monument of the university’s heritage in the heart of Leuven has thus been given a new purpose for the coming years. BAC ART LAB seeks to become a new cultural stakeholder in dialogue with the existing cultural landscape. It seeks to facilitate and foster closer ties between the city and the university.

Een avond waarop taal en klank elkaar versterken, verschuiven en verrassen. Voor alle dromers die zich graag laten meenemen.

Op 24 maart brengt KU Leuven writer-in-residence Sholeh Rezazadeh haar poëzie naar het podium van het BAC ART LAB. Haar teksten gaan in directe interactie met de live improvisaties van Rutger Mathys (mondharmonica) en Oya Bakiroglu (percussie). Soms leidt het woord, soms de muziek. Een dynamische avond waar literatuur en ritme elkaar continu uitdagen en versterken.

An evening where language and sound strengthen, shift, and surprise each other. For all the dreamers who like to be carried away.

On March 24, KU Leuven writer-in-residence Sholeh Rezazadeh brings her poetry to the BAC ART LAB stage. Her texts interact directly with the live improvisations of Rutger Mathys (harmonica) and Oya Bakiroglu (percussion). Sometimes the word leads, sometimes the music. A dynamic evening where literature and rhythm continuously challenge and amplify each other.

Existenzweek is een week waarin studenten Ingenieurswetenschappen: Architectuur een plek in Leuven tijdelijk naar hun hand zetten. Geen gewone lesweek, maar een week waarin ruimte, creativiteit en ontmoeting centraal staan.

In 2026 neemt Existenz het BAC ART LAB over en geeft het, in het teken van het jaarthema Metamorfose, een tijdelijke transformatie. De locatie groeit uit tot een levendige ontmoetingsplek met studiecafé, workshops, lezingen en doorlopende installaties. Overdag is er ruimte om te werken en te ontdekken, ’s avonds verschuift de sfeer naar ontspanning en verbinding.

Existenzweek toont wat er kan ontstaan wanneer studenten zelf initiatief nemen en een ruimte en zichzelf in beweging brengen.

Existenzweek is a week where Engineering: Architecture students temporarily make a space in Leuven their own. Not a typical week of classes, but a week where space, creativity, and connection take center stage.

In 2026, Existenz takes over the BAC ART LAB and, guided by the annual theme Metamorphosis, gives it a temporary transformation. The venue will evolve into a vibrant meeting place with a study café, workshops, lectures, and ongoing installations. During the day, there is room to work and discover, while in the evening, the vibe shifts to relaxation and connection.

Existenzweek shows what can happen when students take the initiative and set both a space and themselves in motion.

06/09 – Leuven Night Run

For Leuven Night Run, our artist resident Kevin Trappeniers created a visual installation work. Using ice craving to turn blocks of ice into houses, and a video projection of both floods and melting glaciers. He wants to put attention on climate change. This project was a continuation of his project ‘Habitation’.

08-20/09 – Residentie CirkLabo

For the first edition of Research Labs the two jugglers Nastasja Jagodic and Lena Kautz came together in "Barefoot In The Park". In this piece, an important role was reserved for... cress. A project in collaboration with CirkLabo.

13-14/10 – Expo Re-Creation

In a world that craves more sustainable ways of producing and consuming, artists join forces with researchers from KU Leuven and other universities. Together, they explore new approaches to the design, reuse, and recycling of materials.

06/09 – Leuven Night Run

Voor de Leuven Night Run, creëerde onze kunstenaar resident Kevin Trappeniers een visuele installatie. Dit door middel van ijsblokken die met icecraving de vorm kregen van huizen. Dit in combinatie met projecties van overstromingen en smeltende gletsjers. Zo wil hij de klimaatverandering onder de aandacht brengen. Dit project was een vervolg op zijn project 'Habitation'

08-20/09 – Residentie CirkLabo

Voor de eerste editie van Research Labs kwamen jongleurs Nastasja Jagodic en Lena Kautz samen in het project "Barefoot In The Park". Hier maakte ze gebruik van een wel heel speciaal materiaal, namelijk waterkers. Een project in samenwerking met CirkLabo.

13-14/10 – Expo Re-Creation

In een wereld die snakt naar duurzame manieren van produceren en consumeren, bundelen kunstenaars en onderzoekers van KU Leuven en andere universiteiten hun krachten. Samen zoeken ze naar nieuwe vormen van ontwerp, hergebruik en recyclage.

🅴🅽 It's almost that time of the year again—our annual Open Studios! A day when we open the doors to our workspace for contemporary art, where Art and Science come together.

🎨Students and staff from the KU Leuven Association can apply for a studio space here. During Open Studios, you can explore these creative spaces while enjoying a rich program of short performances, installations, and a group exhibition.

🦠BAC ART LAB also serves as an incubator for experimental forms of education. We showcase new and exciting work from these projects.

🅽🅻 Het is weer bijna zover, onze jaarlijkse Open Studio’s. Waar we de deuren openen van onze kunstenwerkplaats. Kunst en wetenschap komen er samen!

🎨Studenten en personeelsleden van Associatie KU Leuven kunnen bij ons een atelierruimte aanvragen. Tijdens Open Studio’s kan je een kijkje komen nemen in deze ateliers, maar is er ook een rijk gevuld programma met korte performances, installaties en een groepstentoonstelling!

🦠BAC ART LAB is ook een broeikas voor experimentele onderwijslabs. We tonen nieuw en uitdagend werk uit deze trajecten.

🅴🅽 Is dit nu later?

During the weekend of February 15 and 16, we’re opening our doors for the exhibition of resident Anne-Valérie de Mûelenaere. She will showcase her research-based work in Is dit nu later?

Through intuitive experimentation, she seeks to step out of her head and let go—a small act of resistance against her own perfectionism. Vulnerability, chaos, and contradiction are some of the themes that give her sketches a deeply human character.

🅽🅻 Is dit nu later?

Tijdens het weekend van 15 en 16 februari openen we de deuren zodat je kan komen kijken naar de tentoonstelling van resident Anne-Valérie de Mûelenaere. Ze zal haar onderzoekend werk tonen in de expo “Is dit nu later?”

Door op een intuïtieve manier te experimenteren, probeert ze uit haar hoofd te kruipen en los te laten. Het is een klein verzet tegen haar eigen perfectionisme. Kwetsbaarheid, chaos en contradictie zijn enkele thema’s die de schetsen een menselijk karakter geven.

🎭 An evening filled with performances by students from various disciplines. The result of a practice-based research project that challenges students to experiment with new formats, creating an interdisciplinary night.
