Classical painters traditionally prepared their canvases with a ground layer made from a mixture of chalk, pigment, and animal glue. W***y De Sauter elevates this preparatory stage into a minimalist work of art. He does so by carefully smoothing layers of chalk, pigment, and animal glue across the panel until they acquire a subtle sheen. The effect of this process is visible in the lightly serrated edges of the canvas.

Jan Vercruysse 💧 Labyrinth & Pleasure Garden, 1995-2001

Jan Vercruysse conceived these garden and park designs at a time when the role and significance of art in public space were the subject of intense debate. Unlike most garden designs, which are created in response to a specific site, these projects exist independently of any location. Detached from practical reality, they are first and foremost works of art.

Yet they also carry the potential to be realised. Two of these designs have since been brought to life: one in Germany and the other in Knokke, in the IJzerpark on Nieuwpoortstraat, only a ten-minute walk from the AQUALEX Concept Store.

Tim Volckaert 💧 Adaptation of a 'Portrait of a young Venetian woman', 2016

Centuries ago, the bourgeoisie loved to be portrayed with a landscape in the background. Think of the Mona Lisa or the portraits by Memling. The landscape illustrates or adds something to the portrait, yet it remains subordinate to it and is always clearly separated from it. Tim Volckaert removes this separation, allowing people and landscapes to merge, intertwine, and flow into one another.

Le Prime Luci del Giorno IV (the first rays of daylight) is not a monochrome painting, but pigment crushed between two glass plates. A sculpture in motion, because gravity causes the pigment to slowly yet inevitably slide downward. The result? Fine hairline cracks (craquelure) appear across the surface of color, much like in old paintings. A subtle reference to transience and humanity’s endless struggle against time.
