NTAA - New Technological Art Award

NTAA - New Technological Art Award Biennial NTAA - International Art Competition / Exhibition @ Zebrastraat, Ghent, Belgium

NTAA tries to fill a gap in the mainstream art world by paying attention to the technological developments which impel our global culture. It selects and presents creations in which culture-forming technology plays a central role. Whether low or high tech, or intuitive or experimental, these creations always make us attentive to the innovative trends of our times. The exhibition of achievements of

the selected winners is a compass that orients you to the relevant and innovative use of technology in the artistic sector. A new section consists of the selection, by specialists from various sectors, of key works from the art world, from scientific discoveries or from innovative breakthroughs that have significantly changed our living and thinking habits. These objects or concepts form the basis for a separate presentation and perception, while interacting with the works of the winners of the NTAA.

Patrick Vanden Eynde (b. 1964, Ninove) is a Belgian painter with a stylistically very heterogeneous oeuvre. In 2019, he exhibited a new series of works entitled Cold Fusion, confronting sculptural objects with large figurative paintings. In this series, Vanden Eynde uses cinematic strategies to enhance the visual experience of his works. For this, the artist drew inspiration from the 1971 film THX1138, the debut of Star Wars director George Lucas. He became fascinated by the iconic final scene, in which the main character, escaping from a dystopian world, merges, as it were, with the huge setting sun in the background. Particles (2019) is part of the Cold Fusion series and consists of three elements: a large canvas painted in oil, a silver ring made of polyurethane and, in the same colour, a rod made of honeycomb cardboard. The dark canvas shows two greyish celestial bodies floating in thin air and serves as a background for the shiny sculptures, reminiscent of science fiction artefacts. In doing so, de Vanden Eynde questions the evolving status of painting. In classical art, painting was valued higher than sculpture, while during the heyday of cinema, painters mainly made sets with it.

Yonas Seyoum is a visual artist from Belgium. His work ranges from video to installations. Synthetic imagery and its deconstruction are at the heart of his artistic practice. Most of his work stems from the desire to capture the forever unattainable and to crystallize the ephemeral. In pursuit of that seeming impossibility, he mostly uses digital media. He is captivated by the melancholic poetry and illusionary nature of computer simulations. His work has been shown at the Flemish Parliament in Brussels, Institut pour la photographie in Lille and the Light Festival of Ghent, among others.

Nick Ervinck (1981) is a celebrated Belgian sculptor and contemporary craftsman combining top-notch technology with abstract design, traditional concepts of sculpture art and virtual futurism.
On the edge of the digital revolution, Nick is as much a visionary artist as a shamanistic rule breaker. Collected all over the world, his morphing sculptures and inconceivable mask mutations continue to impress and fascinate. As an artist Nick is expressing a deep unconscious desire to merge nature with technology, creating a new kind of harmonic creature, a human reintegrated and dramatically transformed by its environment as a last hope for survival. Nick Ervinck is as much Manga as he is Moore, his work is as much a projected ever changing hallucination as a expression of the classical rules of the art carved in stone.
