Diving into dialogues between hi-hat and electric guitar + delay:

1) sharp percussive notes on the guitar’s body, 2) long resonances with e-bow and pedal, 3) shifting pulses with delay and muffled strings, and 4) frenetic clashes of hi-hat rhythms with hammer-ons and pull-offs.

Four sound-worlds, one composition in progress. Soon I’ll invite percussionists to join a consortium to bring it alive—who’s in?

Exploring new dialogues between percussion and strings: I’m working on a new composition for hi-hat and electric guitar + delay pedal. The idea is to create rhythmic conversations where the guitar lines intertwine with the hi-hat, generating layered textures and shifting pulse patterns through the delay effect. Beyond rhythm, the guitar becomes a percussive instrument in itself, shaped by extended techniques and sonic experimentation. Soon, I’ll be inviting the percussion community to join a consortium to bring this work to life—stay tuned if you’re curious about expanding the hi-hat’s universe in unexpected ways. If you want to join forces on it, just comment with your name in this post or send me a DM. Thank you!

Playing the waterphone in contact with the strings of an electric guitar, through delay pedals and amplification, reveals an entire spectrum of resonances. The hollow, water-filled metal body vibrates directly into the guitar pickups, creating textures that are at once metallic, fluid, and otherworldly. A dialogue between instrument and object, resonance and space.

Nice moment captured by the eyes of O Meu Fotografo - João Brites Estudio de Fotografia at Curtas Vila do Conde International Film Festival
It was a truly coincidence between the performance and what is projected in the film!

This academic year I’m excited to join the Film Course at ESAP (Escola Superior Artística do Porto) to teach Film Scoring. Contemporary percussion, with its wide timbral and instrumental versatility, opens endless possibilities to create evocative soundscapes that resonate with images and narratives.

I also have a few spots available for private lessons and mentorship in percussion, music improvisation, composition, and artistic project development. Come to get to know my studio!

At this year’s Curtas Vila do Conde International Film Festival, experimental percussionist and sound artist Luís Bittencourt joins legendary guitarist and founding member of Sonic Youth, Lee Ranaldo, for a one-of-a-kind live performance. Together, they will create an improvised soundtrack in real time for the film "Quick Billy" by Bruce Baillie, responding sonically to the film as it unfolds on screen.

This collaboration brings together two artists with distinct yet complementary sonic worlds — Ranaldo’s raw, textural guitar work and Bittencourt’s deep exploration of unconventional sound sources, objects, and percussive gestures. Expect an immersive audiovisual experience where boundaries between cinema, noise, music, and improvisation are blurred.

This film concert is commissioned by Curtas Metragens CRL, VIERNULVIER and Film Fest Gent as part of Curtas Vila do Conde and the Videodroom Festival.

Exploring sound through unconventional methods… During a recent artistic residency, I developed an experimental instrument to compose the music for the short experimental film "Líquida", directed by Gabriela Ferreira (aka Bi Naluna). This instrument uses a dripping device that drops water onto a metal sheet surface, which is amplified using contact microphones and manipulated through audio effects. The resulting sounds are both organic and processed, creating an immersive sonic experience.
