Summer Course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders

Summer Course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders An intensive 10-day program of lectures, discussions, and visits for young researchers. Apply now through November 30, 2015.

The Summer course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders is an intensive 10-day program of lectures, discussions, and visits for young researchers. The Summer Course is a joint initiative of the Flemish Art Collection, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, the Groeninge Museum Bruges, the University of Ghent, the Catholic University of Louvain, the Rubenianum and the Flemish Research Center for th

e Arts in the Burgundian Netherlands. The aim of the Summer Course is to bring to Flanders, annually, a group of 18 select national and international, highly qualified young researchers and to present them with an intensive 10-day program of lectures, discussions, and visits related to the specific course theme within Flemish art. This theme will vary annually and will focus each year on a different art-historical period. The aim is to provide the participants with a clear insight into the Flemish art collections from the period at hand, as well as into the available and most suited research methods, the state of the research and the research needs. Ideally, the speakers will incorporate or allude to topics that will be treated in other lectures. We expect active participation from the participants, and therefore the discussion following each lecture will form an essential part of the program. The first edition of the summer course was titled “The age of van Eyck in context” and took place from June 21 through July 1 2015. Its content was coordinated by Musea Brugge and the Flemish Research Centre for the Arts in the Burgundian Netherlands. The second edition is titled 'The age of Rubens in context' and takes place from June 19 through June 29, 2016. The content is coordinated by the Rubenianum and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Thanks to the generous support of the Flemish Government the participation fee of the Summer Course is now fixed at €900 per person. The fee includes the full 11-day programme, 10 overnight hotel stays (Antwerp) in a single-occupancy room, all transportation within the programme, all entry tickets, 2 receptions, 4 dinners and 6 lunches. To facilitate students with limited financial means the organisation of the Summer Course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders together with the Flemish Government has made available two grants of €450 each. These grants will be awarded (preferably) to one European and one non-European applicant of the Summer Course. The recipients of the grant will pay a reduced participation fee of €450 instead of the regular fee. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of the selection process in early December. Summer Course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders day 11: Brussels

The last day of the Summer Course revealed a hidden gem: the Plaster Cast Workshop of the Art & History Museum Brussels. Created in the 19th century, the Plaster Cast Workshop preserves and operates a collection of nearly 500 moulds and casts. Casting techniques and know-how are passed down from generation to generation, forming a unique piece of living heritage. The moulds and casts represent major milestones of the Western European sculpture from the Antiquity until the 18th century.
The Mosan goldsmith's art at the Art & History Museum brings to life the extraordinary flowering of that art in the Prince-bishopric of Liège during the 12th and 13th centuries. Curator Sophie Balace discussed some of these fine objects. The museum also holds an outstanding ensemble of carved wooden altarpieces. The retable from 1493 illustrating the martyrdom of St George and bearing the signature of Jan Borreman represents the summit of this art form. Curator Emile van Binnebeke discussed a.o. the thorough research on this altarpiece.
After an introduction about the Koninklijk Instituut voor het Kunstpatrimonium - KIK by Christina Currie, Géraldine Patigny presented her research project on the sculptor Jean Moné. A guided tour finally led us to the conservation-restoration studio for stone sculpture, the polychrome wood sculpture studio and the laboratories of the institute. A fabulous finale of this year's edition on Medieval and Renaissance Sculpture!

Summer Course for the Study in Arts in Flanders day 10: Aachen
On Tuesday, we visited the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen. Director Till Holger-Borchert took us on interactive tour through the collection of the museum. At the library, we considered the question 'fake or not fake?' in a discussion on various objects from the collection.
In the afternoon, we visited the Aachener Dom, an architectural masterpiece that combines Western and Eastern Roman building traditions.

Summer Course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders day 9: Liège
This morning, we started with a 'deep dive' into the brass baptismal font displayed at the Saint Barthélemy Church in Liège, where Sophie Balace (Art & History Museum Brussels) discussed the particularly complex and erudite iconographic program, the attribution and the history of the artwork.
In his lecture 'Late medieval Burgundian sculpture: the question of artistic traditions of northern Europe', Prof. Jean-Marie Guillouët (University of Burgundy) pointed out the major impact of Claus Sluter's sculptural work on the European artistic landscape.
Finally, conservator Julien Maquet (Trésor de Liège) showed us around in the Trésor de Liège and Saint Paul's Cathedral, with highlights such as the bust reliquary of saint Lambert and the reliquary of Charles the Bold.

Summer Course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders day 8: visit to SRAL The Conservation Institute and Bonnefanten

This morning, Julie Fassbender (SRAL) welcomed us at SRAL, the Conservation Institute. She shared some information on the extensive conservation project on the Crucifix by Maastricht sculptor Jan van Steffeswert (1460-1530) and pointed out the stylistic caracteristics of his work. We also got acquainted with the specific signature of the artist.

Junior curator Mees Knarren (Bonnefanten) took us to the galleries in which the collection history is presented. We got to know more about provenance research, the links with contemporary art in the collection presentation, the Neutelings Collection, and the features of Jan van Steffeswert's work.

Summer Course day 7: a road trip to Geel, Zuurbemde and Zoutleeuw
This morning, we headed to Geel for a guided tour by René T'Syen at the St Dymphna Church. The church boasts several Flemish masterpieces, including the St Dymphna retable, the Passion retable and the Apostle retable. The church also holds a Renaissance tomb of the Merode family.
After a ride to the countryside, we discovered a hidden gem: the sacrament tower by the workshop of Cornelis Floris II at Sint-Catharinakerk Zuurbemde.
Our journey continued in Zoutleeuw, where we visited the St Leonard's Church, "the artistic shrine of Brabant", guided by Ward Hendrickx.
Prof. Justin Kroesen (University of Bergen, Norway) joined the group during the day. We ended our day with a lecture by Kroesen, in which he bunched up insights from during the day into a clear presentation and brought the topic of altar pieces into a broader European perspective. The lecture ended with some considerations on the Protestant treatment of the material inheritance of the medieval church.

Summer Course day 6: 🚉 Breda and Rotterdam🚉
Bart van Eekelen (Utrecht University, Markiezenhof, Tongerlohuys Roosendaal) guided us around in the Grote Kerk Breda. We focused on the architectural features of the church and took a closer look at the several funerary moments. They help us to situate the Nassau dynasty within the cultural sphere of the later Middle Ages.
Ruben Suykerbuyck (curator Old Masters Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen) introduced the collection and depot of the museum Boijmans van Beuningen. The Schoufour-Martin Collection is particularly special because of the many sculptures that have retained their original polychromy. In a session with expert Marieke van Vlierden, we took a detailed look at this polychromy and at the hallmarks of some sculptures.
