Deze week trokken we samen met onze Bondgenoten, vrijwilligers en het team van Kunsthal Gent naar Watou. Onze collega en artistiek coördinator Danielle Van Zuijlen coördineerde het kunstenfestival, samen met kunstenaar Bart Lodewijks en dichter Michaël Vandebril, onder de titel Gemene Wegen.

Danielle leidde ons rond door het programma. Samen bezochten we kunstenaars uit het residentie- en toevluchtsprogramma van Kunsthal Gent, die hun artistieke praktijk in Watou verder hebben ontwikkeld.

Psychologen Isabelle Ottermans en Veerle Speltincx nodigen je uit voor een reeks groepssessies over burn-outpreventie voor kunstenaars en cultuurwerkers in Kunsthal Gent. 🌿

Het programma is op maat gemaakt voor wie herstelt van een burn-out, op de grens zit van (herhaalde) oververmoeidheid, of het simpelweg wil voorkomen. In een kleine groep van ongeveer tien deelnemers ga je samen aan de slag via educatie, bewustwording en ervaringsgerichte oefeningen.

Gedurende zes sessies verkent de groep het thema burn-out met creatieve methodes. Kunsthal Gent vormt de ideale uitvalsbasis om te werken aan zelfzorg, te midden van een inspirerende omgeving en de intieme setting van Jesse Jones’ installatie ‘Syllabus’.

De focus ligt op kracht en veerkracht. In plaats van enkel uit te leggen wat een burn-out is, nemen de begeleiders je mee in een creatieve ervaring waarin je jouw eigen weg vooruit ontdekt.

Voor wie?
De sessies zijn bedoeld voor volwassenen, kunstenaars en cultuurwerkers. Het programma is preventief en bouwt aan je veerkracht, maar is geen psychotherapie. Ken je iemand voor wie dit waardevol kan zijn? Deel dit bericht gerust!

We gaan de laatste weken in van Untitled (plot for dialogue)! Via dit werk onderzoekt kunstenaar Asad Raza hoe we samen ruimtes ervaren. De monumentale kerk van Kunsthal Gent transformeert zo tot een levendige ontmoetingsplek voor kunst en spel.

Tot en met 30 augustus kun je elk weekend van 11:00 tot 18:00 uur langskomen om een potje te tennissen. De aanwezige tenniscoaches ontvangen je met open armen.

Di 18.08 — Yogafessie met Chloë De Raedt
Heb je ooit al yoga beoefend op een tennisbaan midden in een tentoonstellingsruimte in een ontwijdde kerk? Op dinsdag 18 augustus (17:00) nodigt Chloë De Raedt (Under The Willow - Chloë De Raedt) je uit voor een open yogasessie in onze hallenkerk.

De sessie vindt plaats op de tennisbaan en is toegankelijk voor iedereen, van beginner tot ervaren yogi. Het is een laagdrempelige kans om samen te bewegen en tot rust te komen.

From Kunstenfestival Watou to Kunst­hal Gent: our resi­dent Volks­dan­sen invi­tes you to a ‘Cele­bra­ti­on’, on Saturday during the Paters­hol­fees­ten! We will start with a pro­ces­si­on through Paters­hol and learn to dan­ce with each other and with the earth once again.

During this ‘Cele­bra­ti­on’, artists Maïthé Truy­ens De Wil­de, Ele­na Vloe­berg­hen, and Nixie Van Lae­re make a sym­bo­lic gestu­re to learn how to dan­ce with each other and with the earth once again. Cen­tral to this are joy, con­nec­ti­on, and giving tra­di­ti­on and ritu­al a pla­ce in our con­tem­po­ra­ry soci­e­ty.

We will start at Kunst­hal Gent and make a pro­ces­si­on through the streets of Paters­hol, ending with a col­lec­ti­ve moment of dance.

Starting from the historic Prinsenhof, Het Natuurkabinet Het natuurkabinet takes us on an urban nature walk to another historic landmark: our 14th-century Carmelite monastery in the Patershol district.

At Kunsthal Gent, one of our inner courtyards has been transformed into Cura’s Garden—a magical, misty botanical garden created in collaboration with several artists, featuring plants and trees that transport you back to the beginning of human history.

The Nature Walks on Saturday and Sunday are sold out, but Cura’s Garden is open to visitors every day during the Gentse Feesten and on weekends from 11:00–18:00. Welcome!

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹:

• 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲: Seasonal Neighbours explores the relationship between residents and seasonal workers, while Volksdansen* reclaims Flemish folk dance traditions with a participatory “Harvest Festival.” With Sphinx cinema & café we are also supporting Marie Vanderauwera’s Cinema Watou, featuring low-stimulus film screenings every Sunday evening.

• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻: Together with Be-Part, we present Nico Dockx’s artwork hosting events by S.M.A.K., Kunsthal Extra City and collectives manoeuvre and Shif_t*, alongside local neighborhood activities.

• 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀: Discover works by Diego Herman, Şengül Özdemir, Elke Uitentuis, and De Ambulanten.

• 𝗘𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗘𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Fiona Hallinan’s “Fragment Mediation” fiona hallinan (a long table made from a demolished Dublin church) travels to the Watou church. Jesse Jones’s “Syllabus” Jesse Presley Jones is also present as a large flag and contract, inviting you to explore the work before the curtain returns to Kunsthal Gent.

𝗘𝗹𝘀𝗲𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹:

At the Douviehoeve, we delve into ‘the commons’ and our relationship with the landscape. This location features work by Johan Grimonprez, Wim Cuyvers and Marjolijn Dijkman. 

• Suzanne Treister showcases tarot cards exploring technology and power, alongside AIAI Poetry, an algorithm generating new language from forty years of Watou poets.

• The fictional civilization of ANT Collective incorporates collection pieces from S.M.A.K. , while 019 constructs a wheelchair-accessible ramp zigzagging through the landscape at De Lovie Castle.

Welcome this weekend for 𝗔𝘀 𝗜𝗳 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗨𝘀, a group exhibition curated by the participants of the 2025–26 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 curatorial_studies_kask programme. 

The exhibition appro­a­ches the 13th-cen­tu­ry buil­ding of Kunst­hal Gent as a manu­script that is con­stant­ly being writ­ten and rew­rit­ten; a frag­men­ted lands­ca­pe in which exhi­bi­ti­ons unfold over time. A selec­ti­on of objects from STAM City Muse­um Ghent and the Hou­se of Alijn are brought back to their for­mer loca­ti­on, whe­re they are con­fron­ted with con­tem­po­ra­ry works by artists Danai Ane­si­a­dou, Péla­gie Gbag­ui­di, Méli­na Gho­ra­fi, Leto Keu­nen, Susu Laro­che, Pàpoo Thi­bau, and Julie Vanlook. 

By brin­ging together his­to­ri­cal objects, con­tem­po­ra­ry art­works and the spa­ti­al com­plexi­ty itself, As If More Could Save Us explo­res how mea­ning is never fixed but con­ti­nuous­ly rene­go­ti­a­ted. The exhi­bi­ti­on builds on this evol­ving struc­tu­re. Each spa­ce is sha­ped by what came befo­re; a lay­e­ring of gestu­res and inten­ti­ons across cen­tu­ries. Things accu­mu­la­te here, like they always have.

With 𝗨𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁­𝗹𝗲𝗱 (𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗮­𝗹𝗼­𝗴𝘂𝗲), New York/Berlin-based artist 𝗔𝘀𝗮𝗱 𝗥𝗮𝘇𝗮 Asad Raza transforms our hall church into a tennis court, not just to be looked at, but to be experienced firsthand. On-site tennis coaches will invite visitors to play a game. The meaning of the work lies in a sensory experience that goes beyond seeing and hearing; it is about feeling, smelling, and tasting, as well as the meditative, repetitive act of playing tennis.


With this installation, Asad Raza focuses on the participatory and performative aspects of art. He invites the audience to hit a ball with the tennis coaches on-site as a form of meditation. The competitive element of the game is deliberately ignored to serve as a counterweight to our performance-driven society.

The church, traditionally a place of one-way communication and higher authority, thus becomes a space for reciprocity, play, and relaxation.

TEMPORARY SPACE FOR SHARED PRACTICE
IN KUNSTHAL GENT

Are you a Ghent-based visual artist under 30, looking for a temporary workspace, a place for try-outs, and a collective working atmosphere? From September until the end of December 2026, Kunsthal Gent will transform into a shared workspace.

We invite young artists to research, experiment, get to know one another, and collaborate. We are opening up space for you to work from the perspective of your own practice and needs. There is no predetermined final result. Instead, we offer a shared structure, time, company, and support.

This is not a private studio, but rather a shared workspace where you can work on your laptop, draw, read, write, edit, rehearse, research, hold meetings, and more. What is not possible: polluting productions such as welding, plasterwork, spray-painting, etc.

Who is it for?
For artists in need of temporary workspace, connection, and support. You are welcome to apply if…:

* You are 30 years old or younger.
* You hold a degree in higher arts education (visual arts). Anyone graduating with such a degree by September 2026 is welcome.
* You have a connection to Ghent: you live in Ghent, have a studio or gallery representation here, or recently graduated from a Ghent art academy.
* You value a supportive arts community and the power of collaboration.

This initiative was developed by the Artists’ Fund of Kunsthal Gent, in collaboration with Patty Delanghe—with whom we founded the Louise Delanghe Fund for young artists—and Robert Monchen of Pizza Gallery Pizza Gallery .
