On Sunday, June 15, Mickey Yang's newly commissioned artwork 𝑴𝑴𝑿𝑿𝑽 will be inaugurated in the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-over-the-Dijlekerk in Mechelen, where it will become a permanent neighbor to De wonderbare visvangst by Pieter Paul Rubens. Yang's public artwork is a co-production of Jester (Genk) and Kunsthal Mechelen, curated by Koi Persyn. Today, we are pleased to introduce the artist.

Mickey Yang creates multimedia installations that blend sculpture, video, and performance into multisensory experiences. Her installations appear alive—the sculptures move, vibrate and rotate, often synchronous with audiovisual counterparts. Yang’s practice explores themes of image representation, astonishment, mass culture, and the fluid threshold between the personal and the collective memory. Employing techniques reminiscent of mainstream media and commercial advertising, Yang challenges conditioned ways of seeing. In doing so, she invites the viewer into a state of open wonder—where the familiar and the uncanny coexist.

Op zondag 15 juni wordt 𝑴𝑴𝑿𝑿𝑽, het nieuwgecreëerde kunstwerk van Mickey Yang, ingehuldigd in de Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-over-de-Dijlekerk in Mechelen. Daar zal het een permanente overbuur worden van De wonderbare visvangst van Pieter Paul Rubens. Dit publieke kunstwerk is een coproductie van Jester (Genk) en Kunsthal Mechelen, en werd gecureerd door Koi Persyn. Vandaag stellen we met plezier de kunstenaar aan u voor.

Mickey Yang maakt multimediale installaties waarin sculptuur, video en performance samenvloeien in zintuiglijke totaalervaringen. Haar installaties lijken tot leven te komen—de sculpturen bewegen, trillen en roteren, vaak synchroon met audiovisuele elementen. In haar artistieke praktijk onderzoekt Yang thema’s als beeldrepresentatie, verwondering, massacultuur en de fluïde grens tussen persoonlijke en collectieve herinnering. Door gebruik te maken van strategieën uit de wereld van massamedia en reclame, daagt Yang onze gebruikelijke manieren van kijken uit. Zo nodigt ze de toeschouwer uit tot een open, verwonderde blik—waar herkenning en vervreemding hand in hand gaan.

ⓙⓔⓢⓣⓔⓡ warmly welcomes its new resident Joppe Venema!
Currently, his work—which was realized at Jester—is on display until June 1 at De Cacaofabriek, Helmond (NL).

Joppe Venema (1998, NL) sees his practice as an antenna network attuned to the invisibility of energy and radiation, and how these connect to various forms of knowledge where spiritual and religious understandings, conspiracy theories, and (pseudo)scientific knowledge converge. His work and research are exercises in perceiving realities beyond the human electromagnetic spectrum, as well as exploring infrastructural entanglement and how it is interwoven with questions of ecology, politics, and technology. The notion that humans have always been part of nature is an inherent part of his thinking. This manifests in in-situ installations, sculpture, video, photography, and sound works.

ⓙⓔⓢⓣⓔⓡ heet haar nieuwe resident Joppe Venema hartelijk welkom! Momenteel wordt zijn werk—dat gerealiseerd werd bij Jester—nog tot 1 juni tentoongesteld in De Cacaofabriek, Helmond (NL).

Joppe Venema (1998, NL) ziet zijn praktijk als een antenne netwerk dat zich richt op de onzichtbaarheid van energie en stralingen en hoe zich dat verbindt met verschillende kennisvormen waar spirituele, religieuze kennis, complottheorieën en (pseudo)wetenschappelijke kennis samenkomen. Zijn werk en onderzoek is een oefening naar het waarnemen naar de realiteit buiten ons menselijk elektromagnetisch spectrum, alsook infrastructurele verstrengeling en hoe die is vervlochten met vragen rondom ecologie, politiek en technologie. Dat de mens altijd al onderdeel is geweest van de natuur is een inherent deel van zijn denken. Dit manifesteert zich in in-situ installaties, sculptuur, video, fotografie en geluidswerken.

Today is the opening of Modelling Life, a group exhibition at Z33 for which ⓙⓔⓢⓣⓔⓡ co-produced Christiane Blattmann's new installation Passage. These photos of the production process already share a look behind the scenes. The installation takes the simple shape of a key as the basis for a new series of sculptures. Blattmann's installation was realised in ⓙⓔⓢⓣⓔⓡ using materials from our built environment: steel, aluminium, fencing, plastic. In turn, these industrial materials were combined with softer materials such as stitched cotton, cardboard or pigmented wax. Curated by Kevin Gallagher, the exhibition is on view from today until 24.08!

Vandaag is de opening van Modelling Life, een groepstentoonstelling in Z33 waarvoor ⓙⓔⓢⓣⓔⓡ Christiane Blattmann's nieuwe installatie Passage coproduceerde. Deze foto's van het productieproces delen alvast een kijkje achter de schermen. De installatie neemt de eenvoudige vorm van een sleutel als basis voor een nieuwe serie sculpturen. Blattmanns installatie werd in ⓙⓔⓢⓣⓔⓡ gerealiseerd met materialen uit onze bebouwde omgeving: staal, aluminium, hekwerk, plastic. Deze industriële materialen werden dan weer gecombineerd met zachtere materialen zoals gestikt katoen, karton of gepigmenteerde was. De tentoonstelling is gecureerd door Kevin Gallagher en is te zien vanaf vandaag tot 24.08!

On this work, which Jef Geys (°1934-2018, BE) made especially for FLACC (predecessor of Jester) many years ago, you can read "IKKI thinks welcome, says the coffee is ready"! Under this motto, we open the doors of our kitchen every last Thursday of the month.

Collected every autumn by Aaron and his family, a batch of walnuts are exhibited the year that follows. As their title suggests–an ‘occasion’ to reroot personally. A nut is irreversibly open or closed. Cracking it to know what is inside, its form is broken, creating a new form, and there is no moment of reconfiguring the shell once it is cracked. Many works of Aaron re-appear, self-refer, construct a sort of inner logic or inner poetic ABAB structure between different exhibitions. The nuts, for one, were previously used to denote time, walnuts from 2020, 2021 and 2022 each with their own traits. Often exhibited from the autumn before; they have paused, and represent the past. In brief, walnuts lay open half shells on the floor, what looks like a piece of folded fabric is actually–for those attentive enough to read the material list– half a wall.

Elke herfst verzamelt Aaron met zijn familie walnoten die het jaar erop tentoongesteld worden. Zoals de titel al aangeeft—een 'gelegenheid' om te vertragen. Een noot is onomkeerbaar open of dicht. Als je hem kraakt om te zien wat erin zit, breekt de vorm en ontstaat er een nieuwe, en er is geen moment waarop je de schaal kunt her-configureren eens die gebarsten is. Veel van Aarons werken verwijzen naar zichzelf, keren terug en bouwen een soort innerlijke logica of poëtische ABAB-structuur tussen verschillende tentoonstellingen. De noten werden bijvoorbeeld eerder gebruikt om tijd aan te duiden, walnoten uit 2020, 2021 en 2022, elk met hun eigen kenmerken. Vaak tentoongesteld na afloop van de herfst; vertegenwoordigen ze gedroogd het verleden. Kortom, walnoten liggen open op de vloer, en wat op een opgevouwen stuk stof lijkt is eigenlijk—voor wie aandachtig genoeg is om de materiaallijst te lezen—een halve muur.

Our open call for the 2025-26 residency program is officially closed, and we are happy to report that we received no less than 977 applications from artists all over the world! To carefully judge these submissions, we are assisted by this year's artistic advisory committee: Sorana Munsya, Zeynep Kubat and Yann Chateigné Tytelman. LAST DAYS TO APPLY!

With just a few days to go before the open call deadline, we look back at the previous edition of Currents at Marres Maastricht. Apply until this Sunday (16.03) as a curatorial team and follow in the footsteps of Harriet Middleton Baker, Michał Grzegorzek, Nadim Choufi and Lucas Odahara.

Currents is an annually recurring group exhibition, showcasing works by recently graduated artists from art academies in Belgium, the German Meuse-Rhine region and the southern Netherlands. Currents 12 is looking for a team of curators (two to three people) to take the temperature of the times, select the artists and curate the exhibition that will open in February 2026 in Jester in Genk. Apply as a team!

After 11 editions, Currents has become a well-established platform for emerging artistic talent (of all ages), in which more than 150 artists and 25 curators have already participated. In 2025, four contemporary art institutions join forces to organise the 12th edition of the Currents exhibition: Jester in Genk (BE), Marres in Maastricht (NL), Ludwig Forum Aachen (DE) and KANAL-Centre Pompidou in Brussels (BE).

This year, ⓙⓔⓢⓣⓔⓡ started with two new colleagues to join the team. Today we introduce our assistant curator Karel Op ‘t Eynde:

"As assistant curator at Jester, I am committed to the positioning of this organisation as both responsive and connective. I believe in this artistic platform that is porous to its environment—where ideas and stories from inside and outside are allowed to intertwine. I want to contribute to the development of a space where artists, curators, audiences and partners can gather and give meaning to the artistic trajectories developed at Jester.
With their layered histories, Limburg and Genk form a fruitful artistic context and a place where diverse encounters can flourish. By remaining receptive to what unfolds around us, we build an organisation that remains in motion and continuously allows itself to be nourished by the soil on which it is situated."

Karel Op 't Eynde is a curator and writer based in Brussels (BE). His work mainly focuses on practices of gathering, situated knowledges and learning through doing. Often working collaboratively, his projects intersect curating, writing and publishing. He obtained a master's degree in Design (2023) from LUCA School of Arts in Genk, followed by a postgraduate degree in Curatorial Studies (2024) at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. In the past, he (co-)curated for Kunsthal Gent (BE), Vleeshal (NL), Het Paviljoen (BE) and Design Museum Brussels (BE). In addition to his role as curator and writer, he is a co-founder of Brussels based art platform CASTOR.

Dit jaar startte ⓙⓔⓢⓣⓔⓡ met twee nieuwe collega's om het team te versterken. Vandaag stellen we onze assistent curator Karel Op 't Eynde voor:

"Als assistent curator bij Jester zet ik me in voor een organisatie die zowel ontvankelijk als verbindend is. Ik geloof in dit kunstenplatform dat poreus is voor haar omgeving—waar ideeën en verhalen van binnen en buiten in elkaar overvloeien. Ik wil bouwen aan een plek waarin kunstenaars, curatoren, publiek en partners samen betekenis kunnen geven aan de artistieke trajecten die hier ontwikkeld worden.

Met hun gelaagde geschiedenis vormen Limburg en Genk een vruchtbare artistieke context en een plek waar diverse ontmoetingen kunnen floreren. Door open te staan voor wat zich rondom ons afspeelt, bouwen we aan een werking die in beweging blijft en die zich steeds opnieuw laat voeden door de bodem waarop ze gevestigd is."

Karel Op 't Eynde is curator en schrijver, gevestigd in Brussel (BE). Zijn werk richt zich voornamelijk op samenkomst, gesitueerde kennis en onderzoekende maakprocessen. In zijn projecten werkt hij vaak collaboratief en worden cureren, schrijven en publiceren met elkaar verweven. Hij behaalde een master in Design (2023) aan Luca School of Arts in Genk, gevolgd door een postgraduaat in Curatorial Studies (2024) aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Gent. In het verleden was hij (co-)curator voor Kunsthal Gent (BE), Vleeshal (NL), Het Paviljoen (BE) en Design Museum Brussels (BE). Naast zijn functie als curator en schrijver is hij mede-oprichter van het Brusselse kunstplatform CASTOR.

This Saturday, we activate Warmbed (2020-2021), an installation by artist-architects Ciel Grommen (b. 1989, BE) and Maximiliaan Royakkers (b. 1988, BE), to mark the opening of 𝐅𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐞.

The permanent installation Warmbed was developed on behalf of FLACC/CIAP (predecessors of Jester) and C-mine as an architectural work in constant dialogue with its surroundings. Inspired by the Chinese “kang bed” and the Russian “pechka stove,” this brick sculpture is heated from within, creating a welcoming atmosphere.

Deze zaterdag activeren we het Warmbed (2020-2021), een installatie van kunstenaars-architecten Ciel Grommen (°1989, BE) en Maximiliaan Royakkers (°1988, BE), ter gelegenheid van de opening van 𝐅𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐞.

De permanente installatie Warmbed werd ontwikkeld in opdracht van FLACC/CIAP (voorlopers van Jester) en C-mine als een architecturaal werk dat in constante dialoog staat met haar omgeving. In one week from now, ⓙⓔⓢⓣⓔⓡ invites sound-artist Lukas De Clerck to perform at 4pm to mark the opening of 𝐅𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐞 on Saturday 15.02.

Lukas De Clerck (°1994, BE) is a musician and sound-artist, living in Brussels. His artistic practice is currently centered around the Aulos, an ancient Greco-Roman, double-reeded double pipe, that got extinct more than a millennium ago. After several years of delving deep in the practice of Aulos reed making and playing replicas of ancient instruments, he opens up his inevitably auto-didact artistic output. Following the desire to strip the instrument from its enigmatic past, De Clerck created a new, contemporary Aulos: The Telescopic Aulos of Atlas.

Binnen één week nodigt ⓙⓔⓢⓣⓔⓡ geluidskunstenaar Lukas De Clerck uit voor een performance om 16h, ter gelegenheid van de opening van 𝐅𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐞 op zaterdag 15.02.

Lukas De Clerck (°1994, BE) is muzikant en geluidskunstenaar en woont in Brussel. Zijn artistieke praktijk draait momenteel rond de Aulos, een oude Grieks-Romeinse dubbele rieten fluit, die meer dan een millennium geleden uitstierf. Na enkele jaren van diepgravend onderzoek naar het maken van de Aulos fluit en het bespelen van replica's van oude instrumenten, opent hij zijn onvermijdelijk autodidactische artistieke productie. Vanuit het verlangen om het instrument te ontdoen van zijn raadselachtige verleden, creëerde De Clerck een nieuwe, hedendaagse Aulos: De Telescopische Aulos van Atlas.
