“Seguin”bench by Inessa Hansch
Soon on view Paris (22-26/10/20) - Stay tuned for more infos
design Brussels is proud to publish the Alcôve bench by Inessa Hansch designed for the temporary garden project on Ile Seguin in Boulogne- Billancourt. Inspired by the 1940s rustic garden furniture of Gerrit Rietveld, Inessa designed a range of outdoor furniture, including the bench Alcôve with high backrest, made of weather-resistant wood panels. The bench evokes the creations of Donald Judd through its minimalist character, the simplicity of Enzo Mari’s self-produced furniture, or the sobriety of the church pews designed by the Dutch Benedictine monk Dom Van der Laan.

» disait Dick Hebdige (‘Hiding in the light’, 1988) commentant les « Mythologies » de Roland Barthes.

The exhibition ‘Conversations #1’ is the first stop in Biarritz at galerie du coté for designBrussels, the new platform created in June 2020 by Jean-François Declercq and Roel Rijssenbeek.
As a fervent ambassador of the craftsmanship of the Basque Country, Marc-Alexandre Ducoté likes to confront points of view, to multiply dialo- gues, to create convergences as much as to make singularities resonate. It was only natural to showcase pieces by Belgian and foreign designers and create a dialogue of the works of renowned and emerging artists and designers, sharing common themes and materials.

Ucka Ludovic Ilolo 🇸🇳 🇫🇷
Dance, theater, choreography, drawing, writing and music: Ucka Ludovic Ilolo sees art-making in
truly multi-disciplinary terms. Practiced since childhood, these many activities are the cumulative
expression of his many influences and the fruit a family with multi-national roots: Ivory Coast,
France, Congo, Syria/Lebanon. To this global heritage, add Parisian hip hop battles; international
exhibitions; managing a theater and dance troupe and coaching corporate management teams to
this singular artist’s resume.
Whatever his project, the link between mind and body is at the center of the work. The body as
envelope of the interior and expressor of its potential. Everything, ultimately, is movement

Why designBrussels is created
The platform is the outcome of a common passion for contemporary and collecti- ble design, the desire to promote it and to create synergies in the sector. Brussels is the starting point of a unifying project, which intends to unite all the actors of the scene: both designers and makers, as well as galleries, experts and international representatives.
Established in the heart of Europe, Brussels is a crossroad of cultures, influences and trends. It’s a point of convergence, which functions as a breeding ground for exceptional creativity.
designBrussels is an independent initiative. It aspires to energize the specificities of the different actors, both private and public, and, doing so, to offer designers and makers a national and international appearance.
The mission of designBrussels
designBrussels wants to promote Belgian and international design through a cycle of exhibitions called Conversations, organized in collaboration with befriended gal- leries abroad.
It’s a laboratory of ideas that brings together national and international experts, rep- resentatives abroad and befriended galleries who share the desire to use their ex- pertise, know-how and skills in order to support the breeding ground for creativity within and beyond our borders.
It’s a platform for curated shows of designers and makers, both emerging and re- nowned talents, who put sustainable creations and responsible innovation at the heart of their creation. It will also be a transversal platform, which offers to represent creators, support entrepreneurial initiatives, organize annual exhibitions, edit furni- ture, ensure a commercial showcase, and participate in national and international fairs and events.
In a spirit of partnership and exchange, designBrussels wants to work with cultural and museum institutions, and occasionally propose the donation of works for their collections.

Joan Tarragó 🇪🇸
Street artist and illustrator living in Barcelona, Joan Tarragó Pampalona started his career 12 years ago in Athens, where he studied painting. Since then, he lives a nomad’s life, frequently travelling between Barcelona, Berlin, Paris, Biarritz, New York, Richmond, Miami, Copenhagen, Bulgaria or Thailand. Those trips are probably an allegory of the interdisciplinary commutes between illustration and graphic design, 3D objects and painting, art and design. Among other things, he won several fashion prizes, worked for John Galliano and Quiksilver, and painted murals in the Wynwood district for Art Basel Miami.
Joan’s artistic world is populated with monsters, animals and spirits, geometric or organic lines, symbols and coincidences, that altogether explore worldwide folk and rituals. From his Barcelona-based studio, he collaborates with brands (Nike, Converse, Ray-Ban...), public space projects, new exhibitions or international art festivals.

Studio Corkhino🇧🇪
Out of the need to unplug from an overstimulated society, Cédric Etienne proposes a new language to stand still
with silence and bring us again closer to our true nature.
Fascinated by the hidden power of isolation, Cédric Etienne wants to understand how to curate stillness
and bring a higher meaning back into spaces. Out of this philosophy, he developed the STILL room concept.
Located at Noorderpershuis, a classified heritage building near the harbour of Antwerp, the STILL room is a place of rebirth, a repurposed space that was transformed into an architecture of silence.
Not only does the STILL room hold a selection of Studio Corkinho’s designs,
it highlights their shared level of meaning.
Like craftsmanship results in timeless objects, the room makes time erode into a calming void, a silent atmosphere to ritualize in the now-here.
The “object space" becomes a sanctuary of stillness.
