Personal message of one of our team members:
I needed a break.
But taking a break from activism felt strangely uncomfortable.

Let’s talk.

WOW. We’re overwhelmed by the positive response to Slow Up 🤍

Less than 24 hours after launch, over 400 people have already signed up. Can we make it 500 today?

Here are 3 ways you can help:

—>Spread the word
Imagine an entire country slowing down for 25 hours. Invite your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours to join. The bigger the movement, the stronger the message.

Want to go a step further? Organise your own Slow Up sleepover or slow activity at your school, workplace, sports club or community.

By slowing down together, we send a clear collective signal: this pace is not sustainable.

Every person who joins sends the same message:

”We are outrunning ourselves and the planet. And I protest this.”

—>Save the date
On 24-25 October 2026, as we switch to winter time, we invite everyone to slow down for 25 hours.

The bed-in is our symbol of protest against a rushed society. But you don’t have to stay in bed all weekend to take part. Join in whatever way feels comfortable, accessible and meaningful to you.
At home. With friends. Or at one of our Slow Up locations.

Let’s show that another pace is possible.

As Margaret Mead famously said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

Slow Up for Humanity is organized by vzw, a citizen-led collective, by citizens and for citizens, founded by , and .van.lierop
We are aiming to turn societal concerns into active hope through positive, mainstream, cultural and public actions.
In a context of climate breakdown, growing inequality and rising mental distress, many people feel powerless. We want to break through that sense of apathy and show that change is possible. The goal is simple: turn worry into collective action and show that another, more humane direction is possible.

We believe it can be better.

This initiative is a work in progress. We’re a citizens collective constantly learning and evolving. Do you have any questions or advice? Drop us a line at [email protected] 💛

WHY SLOW UP INSTEAD OF SLOW DOWN?
Slow down often sounds like stepping back. Slow up flips that logic. It suggests a conscious shift upward: towards rest, care, attention, and connection. It is an active choice, not a passive one.

By slowing up, we resist a culture that always wants us to do more, be more, buy more. We choose rest over speed, presence over productivity, and a sustainable pace over exhaustion. Slowing up is not giving up. It is showing up, differently.

Slow Up is a gentle protest against the exhaustion of people and the planet.

On 24–25 October, we invite everyone to stay in bed or slow down for 25 hours. Anyone can participate: from home, with friends or colleagues, or at one of the participating locations across Belgium, including museums, libraries, schools, cultural venues and public spaces.

It is a collective invitation to step out of a culture of “never enough” and protest a system that keeps pushing everything to the limit.

"Werk komt in honderd vormen. But first, coffee."

Slow Up gaat niet alleen over minder doen.

Actor is known for their role in the series 2DEZIT, and a creative voice working at the intersection of performance, storytelling and social reflection. Through their work and public presence, Ferre explores themes of identity, and the invisible expectations that shape contemporary life.

When we called Ferre to ask whether they wanted to take part in the Slow Up campaign photoshoot at KMSKA in Antwerp, they didn’t hesitate for a second. They immediately said yes and jumped on a train, ready to be part of the story.

As an ambassador for Slow Up for Humanity, Ferre brings a clear and grounded perspective on the link between individual exhaustion and the wider systems we live in.

They put it like this:

"Some of the biggest problems in our world are fueled by the belief that more is always better. More speed. More work. More consumption.

Today, I slow down. I listen. I make space for reflection in a culture that rarely stops moving.

That is what Slow Up for Humanity is about: a peaceful invitation to consciously slow down for 25 hours. To pause, reflect, and recognise the exhaustion of our planet.

Because caring for ourselves and caring for the Earth begin with the same simple act: realizing that neither can sustain endless pressure forever."

In a world that often equates value with output, Ferre’s words ask a simple but unsettling question: what if “more” is not always better?
