Today we meet from DG COMP! 🩵

About yourself: Mornings or Nights?
Ideally, I would lean towards selecting the « morning, » but coming from Estonia, where daylight is scarce for nine months a year, I find myself saying « night. »

Tell us more about your DG!
To be effective, competition requires companies to act independently while facing pressure from their competitors. In pursuit of this goal, DG COMP oversees the enforcement of competition rules to maintain uninterrupted competition within the single EU market. DG COMP’s main objective is to safeguard consumer welfare and enhance the competitiveness of the EU.

What does an exciting day in your traineeship look like?
I am a member of the unit responsible for overseeing mergers. My primary responsibilities involve assisting case teams in operational units for major merger cases across different business sectors.
As a Blue Book trainee, my main duties include studying competitive dynamics within a specific business sector and to organise and participate in meetings and interviews with different market participants. This allows the Commission to make well-informed decisions on whether certain mergers are likely to significantly impede effective competition in the EU. In my daily tasks, I also contribute to the development of the Commission’s competition policy. Within the close-knit community of trainees at DG COMP, it has become a tradition for us to gather for lunches or enjoy drinks together after office hours. My Blue Book traineeship has also provided me with the opportunity to participate in a charity running race, marking my first experience in such an event.

Every three years, Ghent is set ablaze with lights all throughout the city. Scattered around the city there are light installations. You can make your own trail and soak in the magic of the city!

Today we meet Daiana from DG EAC! 🩵

Icebreaker: Summer or Winter?
Summer, definitely. I was not made to survive under 10 degrees. It’s funny cause I used to not be a fan of crazy hot temperatures and lying on the beach. But then I lived in Spain for 2 years and now nothing makes me happier than palm trees, an iced coffee and chilling with a book in the sun (with 50 SPF on ofc).

Tell us more about your DG!
So, I am working in DG EAC, more precisely in the Erasmus+ unit. I am sure that most of those reading this can come up in an instant with a *drunken* Erasmus memory. That’s what makes it so cool, when I say “Erasmus” everyone knows what I’m talking about, so I guess I am pretty lucky to get to see how the programme works from “behind the scenes”.

What does an exciting day in your traineeship look like?
An exciting day in my traineeship would be a busy one, with lots of planning and managing projects. Right now, we are preparing a huge meet up with National Agencies directors and that’s very nerve racking and challenging, which makes it fun to work on. Of course, the ideal workday ends with a famous team apero, which we do after every sector meeting. Hopefully I get the chance to experience one outside in the sun at some point as well 😃

Today’s star is Lucia from DG INTPA! Let’s ask her more about her DG and her traineeship 🩵

Icebreaker: Postcards or souvenirs?

Definitely souvenirs! Whenever I go on a trip, I buy a small object to remind me of the country’s culture. Even if postcards give you a picture of a place, souvenirs are, in my opinion, a better way of remembering the general atmosphere of the place. Plus, I have a different souvenir from each trip, which makes for quite a range of objects!

Tell us more about your DG!

The first thing to say about DG INTPA is that it’s so vast that you can’t get bored! With 3 geographical directorates and other thematic ones, the EU’s international partnerships are well supported.
DG INTPA is at the forefront of EU efforts to implement the UN’s Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at global level.
Our main objective at INTPA is to improve global well-being by supporting development initiatives. In particular, this involves the Global Gateway strategy. We are the link between the EU and the rest of the world since HQ!

What does an exciting day in your traineeship look like?

Every day as an INTPA trainee is exciting! I would say that a day I particularly enjoy is a busy day: from meetings to meetings, with colleagues and then trainees! We always have lunch in the INTPA canteen, which has the reputation of being one of the best in the Commission (and I have to admit we’re not to be pitied), followed by coffee with my colleagues in the afternoon. Attending a meeting outside my building also makes for a thrilling day!
Lastly, if the Brussels weather is on my side, meaning it doesn’t rain and it’s sunny, then I’m having the most exciting day of my traineeship!

Today we meet from DG NEAR! 🩵

Icebreaker: White Christmas or Christmas on the beach? ❄️

White Xmas for sure! Even though I grew up in Portugal and our winters are not properly white, I still prefer the cold over the beach! I actually find that “Christmas” and “beach” don’t go well together. I want the cold, the markets and the hot wine!

Tell us more about your DG! 💼

My DG is a lot of fun! We are in charge of pretty much all matters related to the neighbourhood (meaning, our neighbour countries outside the EU) and the enlargement of the 27 (those countries that wish to seat at the table with us, like Ukraine). There are a lot of areas in which DG NEAR acts, but it is always within this spectrum. I like to think of us as the gatekeepers of the EU, although we are, in general, very welcoming and ready to receive everyone with open arms!

What does an exciting day in your traineeship look like? 📆

Uhhh everyday is super exciting. However, a particularly exciting day would be: waking up in a super good mood knowing I work in the best DG ever and then just having meetings (I like meetings ;)), and meeting up with the other trainees at the end of the day. We have these weekly trainee meetings in which we get together to talk about different topics and just hang out, and I always look forward to those because it is also a lot of fun to know what everyone is doing (since we are all in different units). Nonetheless, everyday is super different so I guess you have to come on board and find out for yourself :)
