Moussem provides support to artists and creates programmes that help shape the global contemporary art scene and engage in the creation of a new common cultural heritage. It plays a unique, intercultural part in the art world by integrating the work it offers into established arts institutions on the basis of long-term reciprocal partnerships.

We move, in search of feelings of belonging, feelings of home.
All while physical homes are blown apart, washed away, occupied, stolen or forgotten.
We move, not to explain, not to fix, but to carry it.
To carry the wonder and chaos, the contradictions, the desires, dreams and memories, of this never-ending journey. And to hold its complexity.
 We move. Because movement is who we are.

Broken Home, My Shrine is a multidisciplinary creation by Alix Konadu about migration and identity. It unfolds through two intertwined perspectives: those who move, and those who grow up in the echo of that movement. The migrant, and the migrant’s child.
Drawing inspiration from personal stories and traditions of shrines and objects that carry memory and belonging, four performers create a shared journey through live music and storytelling. Starting from the fact that migration is part of the human experience, love and connection allow past and future to meet, holding on to humanity where it is so easily lost.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗷𝘂𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆? On Orientalism is a video podcast project hosted by Moroccan writer, editor and broadcaster Yassin Adnan. Spoken in Arabic, philosophers and historians from research centres across the Arab world and Europe are invited to probe orientalism’s logic, contemporary manifestations, and historic origins – from a scholarly operation to a global institution that itself has become synonymous with colonialism and imperialism.

Originally produced by the Mujtama for Critical and Historical Studies, Moussem is thrilled to release a first season with five episodes subtitled in English. A new English introduction by the host and the first episode with dr. George Al Faar (professor at the Jordan University, Amman) on orientalism and the justification of Western colonialism are out now.

7seera و T9seera (𝘏𝘴𝘪𝘳𝘢 𝘸 𝘛𝘬𝘴𝘪𝘳𝘢) is a participatory audio project in which Moroccan multidisciplinary artist Nabila Halim uses music, cooking and conversation as frameworks for collective encounters of care.
For its first volume, a group of fifteen people discussed pieces of music together that resonated with the following phrase: “Anger, I flee from you, Anger, I dwell in you”. The recorded encounters were compiled into a sound archive, distributed in both digital form and through physical gatherings, assembled by Laure Merlo (collective Tuba) and built into an interactive platform by Laure Fesler.
What emerges is a collective playlist of words and songs, a field of relations and reverbations, mapping out a many-voiced narrative about anger - an emotion that is so politically laden and often heavily contained. We are delighted to welcome Cleo Diára for a residency at Moussem for two weeks, as part of our annual exchange programme with Alkantara!

Cleo Diára (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist working across theatre, film, and performance. Born in Praia, Cape Verde, in 1987, she moved to Lisbon during her childhood and graduated at the Lisbon Theatre and Film School. Co-founder of the collective Aurora Negra, she has collaborated with some of Portugal’s leading directors and appeared in numerous national and international theatre projects and film productions. In 2025, she received the Best Actress award at Cannes (Un Certain Regard) for O Riso e a Faca, directed by Pedro Pinho – a historic first for a Portuguese production and for the representation of Portuguese-speaking African countries.

A full month of literature, poetry, film, performance, music, photography, urbanism, and print — animated by the artistic creatives of one of the world’s most charged and uncontainable cities.

The core of Johannesburg is rhythm, mobility, self-determination: 𝘑𝘰𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘨 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘵, 𝘑𝘰𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘨 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦. 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 - 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘢 𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦, 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳, 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 (Maneo Refiloe Mohale). A city whose history is filled with conflict, carrying deep traces of post/apartheid. In Johannesburg, violence and the intensity of the public space go hand in hand with animated forms of togetherness that challenge power and refuse to be categorised. Artists operate in fluid collectives, a collaborative ethos that is deeply connected to the cultural and spiritual pulse of the city.

This multifaceted artistic vitality is programmed for an entire month, spread across Brussels’ cultural institutes. Moussem Cities Johannesburg will take place throughout February 2027: programme details this autumn.

10 years ago, the first edition of Moussem Cities invited Tunisian artists, thinkers and cultural operators to tell the story of Tunis through their work. A festival series was born: going from Tunis to Beirut, Casablanca, Algiers, Damascus, Dakar, Teheran, to Istanbul in 2025, Moussem Cities turns to a different metropolis in the SWANA region and broader African continent each edition, in an endeavour to channel their artistic vitality to Brussels.

Together with local artists, diasporic creatives, and various partner organisations in Brussel, the festival explores urbanity across geographies: a platform of recognition, exchange, and collision.

𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗹. 𝗜𝗻 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀: 𝗬𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘆’𝘀 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼, in which we stepped into the emerging universe of mātri-phagía — a transformative rite that seeks to assimilate violence in its most visceral, embodied form. This work-in-progress is inspired by by matriphagy, the act of offspring consuming their mother: through fragments of choreography, projections, and soundscape, Yara Boustany holds Beirut as a city forever reshaping itself through cycles of violence, itself a mother whose essence gets absorbed and transformed in a dance of devouring and rebirth.
