EN/ On Tuesday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Tom Newlands from the UK as our final writer-in-residence of the season. During his stay at Passa Porta, he will be working on his third novel, inspired by the world of art. We can't wait to see where this new project takes him, and we're eagerly looking forward to the release of his second novel. 🇬🇧

NL/ Dinsdag mochten we Tom Newlands uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk verwelkomen als onze laatste schrijver in residentie van het seizoen. Tijdens zijn verblijf in Brussel werkt Tom Newlands aan een derde roman, ditmaal over (onder andere) een gepensioneerde Britse academicus met een passie voor de tekeningen van Albrecht Dürer. We kijken ernaar uit om te zien waar dit nieuwe project hem brengt. 🇬🇧

FR/ Mardi, nous avons eu le plaisir d’accueillir Tom Newlands, venu du Royaume-Uni, en tant que notre dernier résident de la saison. Durant son séjour à Bruxelles, Tom Newlands travaille sur un troisième roman, cette fois-ci consacré (entre autres) à un universitaire britannique à la retraite passionné par les dessins d’Albrecht Dürer. EN/ On the 25th of May, Kate Zambreno had a conversation with Julie Cafmeyer about their life and work. Moving between essay, fiction, diary, manifesto and literary history, their work shows that their writing cannot be reduced to a single genre. An evening that affirmed why Zambreno undoubtedly belongs to an international circle of thinkers and writers held in high esteem. 🧠

FR/ Le 25 mai, Kate Zambreno était en conversation avec Julie Cafmeyer au sujet de leur travail et de ce qui nourrit leur écriture. Naviguant entre essai, fiction, journal intime, manifeste et autobiographie, leur œuvre montre que leur écriture ne se réduit pas à un seul genre. Une soirée qui a confirmé pourquoi Zambreno a pleinement sa place parmi ces écrivaines et penseuses majeures tenu·e·s en haute estime. 🧠

NL/ Op 25 mei ging Kate Zambreno in gesprek met Julie Cafmeyer over hun leven en werk. Tussen essay, fictie, dagboek, manifest en autobiografie toont hun werk aan dat hun schrijven niet tot één genre te herleiden is. Een avond die bevestigde waarom Zambreno zonder twijfel thuishoort in een internationaal rijtje van denkers en schrijvers. 🧠

📣 EN/ The literary season is coming to an end and we're celebrating! On Friday 19th of June, Passa Porta opens its doors for an end-of-season drink. On the programme: readings of unpublished texts, drinks on the terrace, summer reading tips, raffle and an open mic. A joyful, free and festive literary moment! 🎉

Frank Keizer en Alara Adilow nodigen voor de laatste seizoenseditie van Poeticafe opnieuw twee dichters uit voor een voordracht en een gesprek in café Lord Byron. De kersverse winnaar van De Grote Poëzieprijs Samuel Vriezen en de Brusselse Els Moors (die ook op de shortlist stond) zorgen voor de poëzie. 🎤

We ontvangen twee dichters die durven en die met hun werk hoog reiken. Help ons om samen met hen café Lord Byron opnieuw tot het poëtisch epicentrum van Brussel te verheffen. ✨

Jeudi passé, le bookshop était rempli pour accueillir Pincée de Coco et la présentation de son recueil de poèmes "Cicatriste", accompagnée sur scène par Paronomasque et Quentin Dujardin pour une performance poétique intime. Entre slam, musique et textes bruts écrits dans l’urgence d’extérioriser, cette soirée s’est transformée en véritable moment de partage et de reconnaissance collective. 📓🎶

On May 8 and 9, the latest editions of Rihla, an artistic project exploring and examining experiences of exile and questions of identity, took place in both Brussels and Antwerp. ✨

Through a beautiful and powerful audiovisual performance, Asmaa Azaizeh and Rasha Hilwi shared recent letters and explored friendship as a form of home. By reconstructing memory and shared experiences, they questioned whether friendship can compensate for the loss of their former selves, their loved ones, and their city of Haifa, the city of their artistic and political beginnings.

Two evenings resonated across both cities, reflecting on how lucky we are that friendship is not a house of bricks and mortar. 🫂

Annie Ernaux, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature 2022, and Kate Zambreno are writers and thinkers whose work resonates strongly with readers and authors internationally. In this interview, they discussed Ernaux’s body of work, her influence on contemporary writers, and the ways in which she has reinvented memoir writing.
