Happy to have installed these new paintings in collaboration with the amazing drummer Sun-Mi Hong, who will perform this Friday at Art Base Terneuzen! Many thanks to Cathy and Eva for inviting me and making this possible. Art Base Terneuzen is a pilot project to investigate if it is feasible to create a contemporary art platform in Zeeuws Vlaanderen. Its ambition is to bring people together and grow into an international institutional platform. Now based in the brutalist town hall, its aim is to be a “museum without walls”—a place of possibility and community. I am glad to play a part in this new chapter. This is an area where I spent a large part of my youth in the 1980s, where my involvement with culture began, and where my first creative principles were shaped. Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and more specifically the area around Terneuzen and Hulst, were the places where I first got involved with making music and noise. Back in the ‘80s, I started setting up shows for bands, designing t-shirts, flyers, posters, and zines, and even running a small tape label. Through these activities, I was invited by friends to paint on cars, garages, guitars, jackets, walls, and more. When you mention Zeeuws-Vlaanderen in the Netherlands, people tend to think it’s boring and that there’s nothing there. But when you dig a little deeper, for me, it was DIY heaven. Most people I knew were involved in making stuff happen—whether it was running small labels and venues, setting up concerts, playing metal, fire-breathing, customizing bikes, or organizing boat parties. It truly was a place of possibility. So, a big shout-out to all those punks, metalheads, weirdos, bikers, slackers, goths, builders, and players! The music on this post is by .zlhc showing the zvhc scene is very much alive! Hope to cu all there this friday ❤️
