Brussels Philharmonic

Brussels Philharmonic Established in 1935, Brussels Philharmonic is a major Belgian symphony orchestra based in Brussels. “The world needs symphonic music.

And symphonic music needs the world.”

That is the firm belief of the Brussels Philharmonic. As a symphony orchestra founded in 1935 under the auspices of the Belgian public broadcaster, unveiling the symphonic world as best we can is deep in our DNA. By innovating while maintaining full respect for the value of the past, we keep the symphonic music of the past, present and future relevant and ins

piring – for ourselves and all of society. We do this from the historic Studio 4 at Flagey in Brussels, together with our musical director Kazushi Ono: he shares our open and adventurous spirit and our rock-solid belief in the need for cross-fertilization between art, life and society.

Why does Verdi’s Requiem sound so much like an opera? 🤔

Conductor Bart Van Reyn joins Sander De Keere to explore how Verdi fills the traditional mass for the dead with theatrical drama, and why some moments can genuinely scare you out of your skin.

This season brings two reunions. ❤️

Former music directors Michel Tabachnik and Stéphane Denève will both be back with us: Michel in Brussels, Salzburg and Amsterdam, and Stéphane at Flagey in March.

Both are a big part of our history. We can’t wait to welcome them back. 🎶

🎧 From road-tripping through Norway to scouting for orcas from a kayak, violist Hélène Koerver is swapping the city buzz for total mountain silence this summer. 🏔️🐋

Her summer soundtrack is a festival-ready mix of electro, techno, and rock. But when it comes to her absolute guilty pleasures, she has a very specific post-concert ritual:

"I'd have to say Céline Dion’s D'eux album. I often listen to it on my way home after a Brussels Philharmonic concert. What an album! Her voice, the music, the lyrics… it really carries me away." 🚗🎤

“Some music speaks to you immediately."

Alena Baeva has lived with Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto for years. In her column, she writes about the fear, solitude, defiance and bitter irony inside the music, and what it asks of the violinist performing it.

🎧 Between Tomorrowland and an international brass band competition, tubist Jean Xhonneux had a pretty packed schedule before heading to the south of France to recharge. 🧘

His soundtrack mixes massive symphonies with French chansons. But for his actual guilty pleasures, he turns up the volume for French rap and high-energy brass:

"French-language pop and hip hop, without a doubt! Orelsan and Angèle are firm favourites. And then there are a few more guilty pleasures I can't hide: LaBrassBanda, Atomic Ping Pong... They may not always be serious, but they never fail to hit the spot." 🎛️🎺
