Brussels Philharmonic

Brussels Philharmonic Established in 1935, Brussels Philharmonic is a major Belgian symphony orchestra based in Brussels. “The world needs symphonic music.

And symphonic music needs the world.”

That is the firm belief of the Brussels Philharmonic. As a symphony orchestra founded in 1935 under the auspices of the Belgian public broadcaster, unveiling the symphonic world as best we can is deep in our DNA. By innovating while maintaining full respect for the value of the past, we keep the symphonic music of the past, present and future relevant and ins

piring – for ourselves and all of society. We do this from the historic Studio 4 at Flagey in Brussels, together with our musical director Kazushi Ono: he shares our open and adventurous spirit and our rock-solid belief in the need for cross-fertilization between art, life and society.

D-1 Tectonics Brussels 🚀

Did you know you can experience a whole lineup of Tectonics events for free? Here is your guide to catching the creative energy of the festival without a ticket.

🆓 Ictus & Tarek Halaby (Fri, 19:00)
One of the most powerful works for narrator and ensemble in modern music. Frederic Rzewski’s Coming Together / Attica brings 1971 prison letters to life through intense musical energy that pushes violently against its own limits.

🆓 Hoda Siahtiri & Shaahin Peymani (Sat, 19:00)
For Those Who Live At The Shoreline is a ceremonial performance weaving live electronics with the sounds of mountains and landscapes, moving like the slow tides of the ocean.

🆓 Ictus plays Fabio Machiavelli (Sat, 17:15 & 22:00)
A live concert performance featuring handmade instruments and electronics that explore the deep sounds and vocal calls of large marine mammals.

🆓 Sound Installation: Fabio Machiavelli (Fri & Sat)
Step inside Studio 3 outside of live performance times to walk through and explore each custom instrument's independent sonic world on your own.

🆓 Expo Baudouin Oosterlynck (Fri & Sat)
What would the world sound like if your ears were a completely different shape? Since the 70s, Oosterlynck has created custom "listening instruments" that don't make sound, but fundamentally reshape how you hear space, air, and silence. Try them out during fixed session times in Foyer 3.

🆓 Sonic Harvest (Fri & Sat)
Three brand-new sound installations by young audio makers created from a "wild sonic foraging" expedition inside Flagey, including a stairwell piece driven by the live wind speed outside.

D-2 Tectonics Brussels 🚀

From raw, unscripted improvisations to a deep-sea soundscape: explore the late-evening sessions.

▪️ Farida Amadou + Heather Leigh (Fri, 21:00) (🚨 sold out)
An intense, unscripted dialogue where electric bass textures meet the expansive, floating tones of the pedal steel guitar. The audience sits right on the stage of Studio 4, inches away from the musicians.

▪️ Ictus: Interference & Leonie Strecker / Pak Yan Lau (Fri, 22:00)
A double bill in Studio 1 blending Pak Yan Lau’s tactile setup of prepared pianos and percussion with shifting, hypnotic acoustic interference layers by composer Leonie Strecker.

▪️ Ictus plays Fabio Machiavelli (Sat, 22:00) (free)
Step into Studio 3 for a late-night session of Micro Breaths of a Blue Lung. A live concert performance featuring custom-built instruments and electronics that recreate the deep, percussive vocal calls of marine mammals.

D-3 Tectonics Brussels 🚀

From an orchestra scattered across the building to a choir performing completely without words: discover the festival's concert programmes that turn classical stage traditions upside down.

▪️ Brussels Philharmonic & Ilan Volkov: Øyvind Torvund (Fri, 20:00)
Can you listen to a building? The orchestra breaks out of the stage to play all over Flagey simultaneously. Instead of sitting down, you wander through the building as layers of sound hit you from everywhere.

▪️ Vlaams Radiokoor & James Wood (Sat, 18:00) (🚨 sold out)
Vocal music stripped of language, turning the choir into a raw, physical wall of shifting human sound.

▪️ Jennifer Torrence (Sat, 19:00)
A one-woman band playing instruments like whirly tubes, an Orff marimba, fidget spinners, handbells, foot-played melodicas, and spinning microphones attached to a cymbal.

▪️ Brussels Philharmonic & Ilan Volkov: World Premieres (Sat, 20:30)
A double world premiere concert featuring Maya Verlaak’s real-time electronic feedback experiment Sci-Volo Palla, alongside Cassandra Miller’s deeply personal piece on memory and time, Dad Goes to the Mountain.

The intensity of the Queen Elisabeth Competition finals is behind us, and now it’s all about the joy of making music together. 🎻✨

We are so incredibly excited to hit the road with Ettore, Tae-Yeon, and Leland for a four-day tour across Belgium, alongside conductor Samy Rachid. It's going to be absolute magic!

Here's what they are bringing to the stage:
✨ Leland Ko (3rd Prize): Dvořák’s Cello Concerto No. 2
✨ Tae-Yeon Kim (2nd Prize): Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1
✨ Ettore Pagano (1st Prize): Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1

We kick off tomorrow night at Bozar before heading to Leuven, Hasselt, and Brugge! 🚀

✨ A weekend of pure musical magic at Flagey! 🏛️🎻

Last weekend, the next generation completely took over the big stage of Studio 4:

🎬 On Saturday: the Brussels Young Philharmonic & Remua Asbl set off on an epic symphonic adventure through the film music of Harry Potter, Studio Ghibli, and Superman. 🧙‍♂️⚡️

🌍 On Sunday: Almost 100 kids from El Sistema Belgium joined us on stage for The Laatste Zinneke Symphonie, proving that music is the ultimate universal language. 🚀

A massive congratulations to all the young talents, ReMuA, and everyone who came out to support!

💥 "Tectonics is not about how we think about contemporary music; it is about how we experience it."

Meet Ilan Volkov, our Principal Guest Conductor, and founder and curator of Tectonics.

Over a decade ago, he created this festival to push the boundaries of new music. On June 19 & 20, he finally brings his brainchild to Brussels to completely take over Flagey.

What can you expect? In Ilan's words:
💬 "With Tectonics, I want to reveal the many facets of contemporary music – creating a mix of genres and ideas where symphonic works meet sound art, electronics, and improvisation. The festival’s name comes from precisely that idea: music as tectonic plates colliding, pushing in different directions, and generating entirely new worlds."
