The Centre for Fine Arts aims to be a European cultural centre, anchored in the 21st century, with a novel and innovative view of society, a laboratory of ideas attuned to society’s current and future challenges. In the coming decade, Bozar aims to embody change, and contribute to seven major and evolving societal challenges. Sitting atop Coudenberg Hill, monumental and yet discreet, the Brussels

Centre for Fine Arts is Belgium’s major cultural venue. In 1913, Queen Elisabeth and King Albert I expressed their desire to build “a temple devoted to Music and the Arts”. Designed by renowned Belgian architect Victor Horta (1861-1947), construction began after the First World War. Upon returning from his stay in the United States, Horta abandoned his flamboyant, industrial Art Nouveau style for the more monumental and geometric language of Art Deco. Inaugurated in 1928, the Centre for Fine Arts is a testimony to this aesthetic revolution. For nearly a century, the centre has hosted the art world’s crème de la crème, and it is where most of Bozar’s cultural and artistic activities are held. FR

“Remember, they can’t cancel spring!” 🌱

We learned today the sad news of the passing of David Hockney, one of the leading figures of contemporary art. Hockney was endlessly surprising: an artist who never stopped researching, experimenting and expanding the possibilities of painting and image-making: from portraits and landscapes to polaroids and iPad paintings.

Over the decades, Bozar had the privilege of presenting his work on several occasions: first in 1967 in the exhibition Young English Painters, in 1973 as part of Europalia Great Britain, during his major retrospective in 1992, and again in 2021–22 with an exceptional double exhibition that attracted over 166,000 visitors.

Hockney left an indelible mark on art history through his singular vision, his innovative spirit, and his tireless celebration of life. His work reminded us to look again - at colour, at nature, at one another - with curiosity and joy. For example, his remarkable work The Arrival of Spring, Normandy, 2020, was born from his famous message during the pandemic: “Remember, they can’t cancel spring!”

Bozar extends its heartfelt thoughts to his family, loved ones, and all those whose lives have been touched by his work.

When chaos becomes strangely comforting 😌

In the imaginary village painted by Pieter Brueghel the Younger, roofs are covered with pies, big fish eat small fish, and people literally run their heads against walls. Every figure, animal, and object illustrates one of the nearly hundred proverbs and sayings hidden throughout the painting.

Some of these expressions still survive in Dutch today, while others have disappeared from everyday language. We still “serve pearls to the pigs” but few people would now say that a woman “puts the blue cloak on her husband” to describe infidelity.

Painted in 1607, this work is considered the oldest known copy of Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s original composition from 1559. Across the many surviving versions, the message remains the same: this is not a world of wisdom, but one filled with absurdity, inversion, and human folly.

And yet, somewhere within this chaos, the painting creates a strange moment of calm and concentration. We see many of you standing in front of it for long stretches of time, searching for each hidden proverb.
