A conversation around Failles.
In this new video, Director - Arthur Beaude reflects on Failles, the current duo exhibition at SEPT Brussels bringing together Lee Hyun Joung and Joana Schneider for the first time.
The exhibition explores the dialogue between two distinctive contemporary artistic practices. Through Hanji paper, natural pigments, marine rope, and textile structures, both artists investigate themes of time, repetition, material transformation, and the expressive potential of the line. Though developed through different cultural backgrounds and mediums, their works reveal striking affinities, creating a compelling encounter between contemporary abstraction, sculpture, and textile art.

Lee Hyun Joung (b. 1972, Seoul) lives and works between South Korea and France.
Recognized for her large-scale works on handmade Hanji paper, Lee Hyun Joung has developed a unique visual language centered on the line as a metaphor for life’s journey. Using traditional Korean materials, including Hanji paper and natural pigments, she creates immersive compositions built through thousands of hand-drawn gestures. Her work has been exhibited internationally and has become widely celebrated for its ability to merge contemporary abstraction with themes of memory, movement, identity, and the passage of time.

Joana Schneider (b. 1990, Munich) lives and works in Amsterdam.
Working primarily with marine rope, Schneider creates sculptural compositions situated between textile art, painting, and relief. Through a meticulous process of accumulation and repetition, she transforms industrial materials into organic structures that evoke landscapes, waterways, and natural systems. Her practice is distinguished by its strong material presence, technical precision, and contribution to the expanding field of contemporary fiber and textile-based art.
