Regisseur AΓ―da GabriΓ«ls nodigt componist-organist Maria W Horn, Ictus ensemble en een danser uit voor een langgerekte performance waarin het publiek wordt ondergedompeld in een stroom van geluid, beeldende kunst, licht en beweging. De traagheid, de ritualisering van het concert en de geleidelijke invasie van de klankruimte door een atypisch kwintet – strijktrio, trombone en analoge synthesizers – creΓ«ren wat Horn β€œauditieve monolieten” noemt. Voor AΓ―da GabriΓ«ls onthult muziek pas haar diepste impact wanneer ze wordt beschouwd als een kunst in de ruimte, eerder dan in de tijd. Van dat punt af is alles mogelijk. Traagheid betekent geen gelukzaligheid. Het exploreren van de korrel van het geluid is niet de harmonie der sferen. Er schuilt gevaar. Het klanklandschap toont barsten, verbrokkeling, gelaagdheid en een van oorsprong seismische aard: zodra we bepaalde drempels overschrijden, betreden we een zone van hoge turbulentie.

Eighteen voices dissolve and reassemble, blurring the lines between unity and discord. No stage, no fixed perspective. You move, the music moves with you. Or not.

It is like a bizarre mating dance, two artificial lovers cloaked in red and pink, tilting and bending, flirting and pulling away. While these lights effortlessly mesmerise nightclub audiences, here and now they seem disturbingly and strangely tenderly engaged in a Sisyphean seduction dance. The lights keep approaching but never arrive, leaving us with the uncomfortable truth that the spark we crave may be forever out of reach.

Polyphonies explores polyphonic music as a social scale model. Seventeen singers swarm together, disintegrate into smaller formations or separate particles. Conductor Kaspars Putniņő guides the choir from one era to the next, from the 14th-century Guillaume de Machaut to contemporary composers such as Julia Wolfe, Kaija Saariaho, Caroline Shaw and Adja Fassa. The audience is invited to move freely through the space and decide for themselves where and when they want to sit, lie down or lean.
