Presenting American Theatre in Brussels since 1969 It aims to present a variety of plays by American and other playwrights.

The American Theatre Company (ATC) is an international non profit-making cultural association (aisbl) based in Brussels, BELGIUM, offering community theatre of the highest standard, relying solely on voluntary work. Its activities are organized through a Board of Directors which meets on a regular basis to plan the Season calendar and ensure the smooth running of productions.

The ATC will be holding auditions Sept. 3-6 for its Spring 2027 show

EUREKA DAY
the Tony-award winning comedy
by Jonathan Spector
directed by Tom Mallan

The Eureka Day School in Berkeley, California is an independent (i.e. private) school where teaching, learning, and living align with politically and socially progressive ideals. In weekly meetings the school’s five board members craft policy to bolster the traditions of inclusivity and kindness, reaching every decision by consensus. But when a mumps outbreak descends on the community, facts become subjective and every solution divisive, leaving the school’s leadership to confront the play’s central question: how do you build consensus when no one can agree on the truth?

As the community unravels, the audience laughs in painful recognition of the play’s prescient perspective on fissures in the broader American and global community during the Covid and Trump era.

CHARACTERS
SUZANNE - Female. Mid-50s. White.
DON - Male. Early 60s. White.
CARINA - Female. Early 40s. Black or biracial.
MEIKO - Female. Mid-30s. Biracial.
ELI - Male. Mid-30s. White.
WINTER - Female. 30s – 50s.

DIVERSITY IN CASTING
We plan to be attentive and responsive to the race and age of each character as envisioned by the writer, though we will not be bound to the exact description. We are committed to forming a diverse cast, not only because of the ATC’s standing commitment to diversity and inclusion but because of the story’s special interest in the power dynamics and challenges to unity and consensus that sometimes follow racial lines, even in an explicitly progressive setting like Eureka Day.

Performances will be March 8-21 (up to 5 nights/week). Tech week will be March 1-7 for up to 4 days during the week. All cast members must be available throughout this entire period.

Actors should expect to rehearse in 3 hour blocks, 2-3 days/week, on selected weeknights and weekend days in October, November, January and February, with increased hours & days as we approach opening.

We will select which days and build the rehearsal schedule from actors' stated availability on the audition form, so please provide a complete list of any foreseen absences or conflicts to the best of your ability.

📖 Meet EMMA (Tosca Trevi), a Sociology student set on having a conversation with a total stranger on a park bench.

In Bench, a chance encounter between two women turns into an unexpectedly intimate conversation. Claire, an exhausted working mother, is stealing a rare moment of peace when she is approached by Emma, an awkward sociology student conducting an experiment that requires her to talk to strangers. What begins as an irritating interruption becomes a candid exchange about work, family, regret, and the fraught realities of adulthood. As Claire and Emma open up about their lives, their conversation is at turns embarrassing, hilarious, and cathartic. This brief, random meeting of two strangers on a park bench reveals how the simple act of listening can take life in a whole new direction.

“Bench”, written by Matthew Snoding, is the winner of the 2025-26 ATC Playwriting Competition and will be performed as part of Studio Nights 2026 alongside “Together”. It is directed by Maja Lay.
