The Embassy of Brazil in Brussels, in partnership with the Brussels African Art Center and Ricardo Fernandes Gallery, is pleased to invite you to a talk with Brazilian artist Antonio Sergio Moreira.
The work of Antonio Sergio Moreira pulses with a compelling ambiguity that defies conventional interpretation. Drawing inspiration from religious rituals, popular festivals, and a broad tapestry of cultural references, his art channels the spirit of Black Power—both in Africa and across the diaspora.
Moreira's sculptures, in particular, resonate with this layered complexity. Beyond them contemplative aspects, they serve as conduits between the sacred and the profane, the ancestral and the contemporary. Through intricate detail and theatrical form, they echo Africa's spiritual legacy while evoking a sense of wonder, reverence, and celebration.

Nous aurons l'honneur d'accueillir la brillante Rosy Sambwa, marraine de notre tout nouveau programme de talks « Femmes & Cultures ». Créatrice engagée, historienne du costume et éducatrice passionnée, Rosy met en lumière l’héritage textile africain, l’écologie, le recyclage des matières et les savoir-faire traditionnels à travers une approche profondément innovante.
Distinguée par plusieurs prix internationaux, dont le Empowering Women International Award, reconnue parmi les 250 Femmes Pionnières du magazine Tropics, et mise à l’honneur dans Forbes Afrique, Rosy Sambwa est une voix incontournable pour penser la mode autrement.

Une conversation inspirante avec Rosy Sambwa, invitée d’honneur.
Notre African Art Center a le plaisir de lancer un nouveau cycle de rencontres intitulé « Femmes & Cultures », pensé comme un espace de parole, de réflexion et de transmission autour des contributions féminines aux dynamiques culturelles contemporaines.
Ce talk propose une nouvelle lecture de l’histoire de la mode et met en lumière l’influence majeure de l’Afrique sur l’évolution du costume, bien au-delà des clichés exotiques. Il s’agit d’une immersion entre histoire, culture et tendances, pour comprendre pourquoi l’Afrique n’a pas seulement inspiré la mode, mais en est un acteur central.

The Brussels African Art Center is pleased to announce the fourth edition of its Viewing Room with the exhibition Afro-Resonances by artist Sergio Moreira, which will take place from February 20 to April 20, 2025.
The masks and sculptures of Antonio Sergio Moreira are imbued with an ambiguity that challenges their very concept. Inspired by religious ceremonies, popular festivals, and a wide range of subjects, these works embody the essence of Black Power, in Africa and beyond.
In Moreira’s sculptures, this fascinating ambiguity is palpable: these pieces are far more than decorative objects; they create bridges between the sacred and the profane, between the ancient and the contemporary. By evoking Africa’s spiritual and cultural roots, they inspire both reverence and mystery while inviting celebration through their meticulous details and theatrical forms.
His art is part of the playful African tradition, which has profoundly influenced contemporary Brazilian arts and festivities. Brazil’s African heritage shines through in regional celebrations and Carnival, where joy, rhythm, and expression are omnipresent.

The Viewing Room is the result of a collaboration with Fernandes Gallery.
