Domenico Gnoli died in 1970, aged 36. He had been painting seriously for six years.

In that time, he produced one of the most quietly radical bodies of work of the twentieth century - and almost no one outside specialist circles knows his name.

The Adventure of Domenico Gnoli opens today at in New York. The largest exhibition of his work in the United States in over fifty years.

What Gnoli understood - and what makes these paintings so unsettling - is that the familiar becomes strange the moment you remove its context. A collar without a neck. Hair without a face. Two bodies under a duvet, invisible. The back of a canvas, signed and dimensioned, presented as the subject.

He wasn’t making surrealism. He wasn’t making pop art, though people tried to put him there. He was doing something more patient and more precise: isolating the overlooked detail until it demanded to be seen.

He mixed sand into his pigments, building surfaces that recall Italian fresco: tactile, encrusted, impossible to fully capture in a photograph. Which is exactly why the show matters.

If you’re in New York before May 23rd, go.
