WIA was happy to be one of the partners of togetthereart, an exhibition highlighting 8 international women artists during this year’s Venice Biennale.

🎨This enabled me to work with other collaborators in Venice and internationally who were on site. Wonderful professional and personal encounters.
Thanks to Marika, who through strength and determination led a project in the Oratorio Dei Crociferi, a 16th-century chapel painted by Jacopo Palma il Giovane covering all the walls. It also served as a refuge for women and is listed as a UNESCO protected heritage site. (Partner of the exhibition)

👀The Oratorio Dei Crociferi is steeped in women’s history and is therefore today a place for the reappropriation of artistic space by women artists, both venician and international, and enables us to link past, present and future through contemporary art.

🔥DISCOVER ARTISTS OF THE BIENNALE🔥

Diane Marie Uwase (RW, 1993) is a self-taught artist who lives and works in Antwerp(BE). Her narrative prowess thrives in allegorical portraiture, capturing diverse individuals in nuanced states. Since initiating her artistic journey in 2020, Uwase’s work delves into these intimate moments, presenting viewers with captivating spaces for contemplation and conjecture.

Her work mainly contains allegorical portraits, of which the subjects fluctuate between different states of being. The overarching concepts are based on personal and observed experiences and the (often flawed) individual perception of ourselves but also as a society. The work is an autobiographical visual attempt at unveiling these emotions and the internal conflict that lies beneath the facade which is used to conform to expectations. The use of figurative, geometrical and surreal elements enacts a constant dialogue between reality and fiction. In such creating a sense of mystery as to the being of each character and a glimpse into the psyche of their space. Her aim is to present these spaces and hypotheses while simultaneously attempting to offer possible answers, through inquiry and engagement.

🔥DISCOVER ARTISTS OF THE BIENNALE🔥

Leen Van Dommelen (BE, 1987) is a performance and visual artist based in Brussels. She studied sculpture at La Cambre Brussels, and graduated in 2017 with a master’s degree in visual art and Choreography at ISAC and Académie des Beaux arts Brussels.
Her work, made up of performances and installations, seeks a vulnerable confrontation between the viewer’s gaze and the introspective, self-conscious eye. It explores the mechanisms going on behind the scenes of the visible body, often in relation to, and sometimes in tension with, external reality shaped by societal norms and expectations.

Delving into the complex interplay between psyche and body, focusing on the duality of control – holding and losing it. How the body opens up and the complexity of the inner world seeps out. Transforming subjective experience into tangible matter, as something to hold on to, a way of shaping and transforming back, looking at it, distancing from it. In doing so, the body is fragmented, distorted, enlarged, and pulled out of context, taking up space and sometimes even escaping from itself.

🔥DISCOVER ARTISTS OF THE BIENNALE🔥

As a slow choreographer, Alice Van der Wielen-Honinckx aims to create spaces where less action makes room for things to affect us more subtly. Alice has been developing a practice of slowness since 2017, nourished by academic as well as embodied research. She studied literature at KULeuven and contemporary performance at Utrecht University. Her essay ‘Space as Atmosphere: Floating in a Molecular Bath’ was published in Slow Spatial Reader: Chronicles of Radical Affection edited by Carolyn F. Strauss (Amsterdam: Valiz, 2021).
On the Biennale, she will present the performative installation Creatures at rest. We see performers in the intimate and fragile environment of rest, daydreaming, and maybe even sleep, where things can be done at their own pace, and can exist in their own space of radiance. This work has been presented, amongst others, at Museum M Leuven, and at Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto.

🔥DISCOVER ARTISTS OF THE BIENNALE🔥

Lou Cocody-Valentino (MQ, 1994) is a visual artist whose visual language is rooted in memories her childhood as an islander. Her work questions a personal geography, unfolding in composite installations. Her process is a reflection on color, composition and the translucence of materials. Lou experiments with gleaned materials, seeking to find the point of union between them through a variety of techniques: sculpture, vegetable dyeing, screenprinting… She aims towards the creation of a porous body of work, that would answer the main notion that drives her : the influence of territories and landscapes on identity.

Her practice focuses on the landscape as a character, through an abstract representation of it. If, initially, her interest in representing specific landscapes stemmed from a form of nostalgia, this now coincides with a need to pictorialize a history, both personal and global, in which the landscape plays the role of witness. Witness to traces, to movements and erosions, to experiences – a witness that is both monolithic and fragile.

Lou’s most recent works focus on the representation of aquatic landscapes, as she sees the seas and oceans as a universal terrain for dialogue with a broader audience. Having grown up on an island, surrounded by the sea, the artist sees it as a space of possibilities, of playfulness, of colors and textures non-existent on land. It’s the space that connects us : the “in-between islands” of her Archipelago. These works form an ensemble entitled underwaterscapes, and are made mostly from pigmented paper pulp. Layers of this recycled material accumulate, just as layers of sediment form reliefs. These pieces are inspired by the underwater landscapes the artist has observed over the years during dives in the Caribbean Sea, and constitute a play on colors, layers and matter. They evoke another world, populated by geological formations and underwater flora.

🔥DISCOVER ARTISTS OF THE BIENNALE🔥

For several years now, I’ve been developing a body of work based around textiles, using this traditional, popular, classic and functional material. In the collective imagination, textile-making is associated with an exclusively feminine task, at least in our European societies. I’m following in the footsteps of this heritage while revisiting this medium, in particular by working with it in a frontal, massive and imposing manner, in contrast to the meticulousness and introversion traditionally associated with embroidery or weaving.
The content of my textile production is also intended to contribute to a manifesto of « seeing differently ». The content of my textile work is also intended to contribute to a manifesto of « seeing differently ». Thus, my work is made up, through the use of sewing, appliqué, tapestry and embroidery techniques, of a superimposition of (non)referential and (non)figurative forms drawn from observations made in my everyday environment or from my memories.
Playing with preconceived ideas about emblems and symbols, as well as those associated with classical tapestry and limited to the use of primary colors, these forms and figures, both personal and collective, gradually transform into a narrative composition. These narratives function as atemporal fictions, daydreams that are nonetheless firmly rooted in the present, since they have absorbed its material.

🔥DISCOVER ARTISTS OF THE BIENNALE🔥

Originally from Nantes, Amélie Scotta is a visual artist with degrees in Art (La Cambre, Brussels) and Design (HEAR, Strasbourg). Winner of various prizes and artistic residencies (Prix Cocof, Prix Carré sur Seine, Casa de Velázquez, Cité Internationale des Arts, Villa Empain…), she exhibits regularly in Belgium and abroad.
From the Jeddah Tower to the disused factories of Roubaix, from the Rio stadium to the Versailles du peuple, from medieval recluses to the scaffolding of Brussels, the artist intuitively questions architecture in all its forms. Approached primarily through drawing, but also through sculpture and photography, construction enables her to speak of the human being, who both inhabits and builds.
In her recent work, Amélie Scotta takes a more sensory approach to landscape and habitat, working with color and materials. She addresses the question of « withdrawal », a position in relation to the world that can bring protection, confinement or liberation.

🔥DISCOVER ARTISTS OF THE BIENNALE🔥

Juanita Onzaga (1991) is a Colombian filmmaker and visual artist currently based between Brussels, Bogotá and México. Her practice is a boundary-pushing exploration between cinema, moving image, technology and art, moving from intimate, sensorial and emotional landscapes to the crossroads between ancestral futurism, transformation of trauma from violent conflict, mysticism, the dreamworlds and the poetics of nature by decolonizing time and perception of the real through ancestral technologies.

Juanita combines fiction and non-fiction elements, creating poetic tales that reflect different ways of perceiving reality within strong political contexts. Her works create within realism, an intimate quest for mysticism, where the invisible complements and gives more answers and meanings to the physical world.
Her works have been presented at Cannes Directors Fortnight, Berlinale, Venice Film Festival, IFFR, the MoMA of New York, the Museum of Modern Art of Paris and more festivals and venues.
