Occupied, abandoned, saved and finally restored, the Maison Hannon reminds us that architecture evolves and that heritage designation is a choice made at a given moment by a constellation of actors. On at least two occasions, we nearly lost it forever. Restorations, moreover, are never neutral: they reflect the knowledge and skills of their time.

Our exhibition, From Home to Heritage, tells this story of time passing.

We're wishing you a warm holiday season filled with togetherness! 🎄

As we celebrate this Christmas Eve, we'd like to take the moment to focus on Le Soir by Léon Frédéric, a touchingly simple interior scene of humble folk, almost as a theatrical presentation; there is an intense, almost sacred quality in this depiction.

Frédéric depicted working-class living conditions, but he chose to show the tranquil strength of less advantaged communities rather than focusing on poverty. In Le Soir,
that strength is manifested in the suggestion of comforting silence, in the light that breathes life into a black and white interior and in the composition itself, the characters being set inside an enclosed, quasi-sacred space. Here, the meal has become a ritual, the lamp an ever-lasting light and the body position and gaze of each
individual seem suffused with a collective memory.

There is a type of monumentality in this everyday scene, a grandeur in the ordinary.

The moment is so lovely with light,
In the garden, all around us;
The moment is so rare with purest light
In our hearts, deep within us.
– Émile Verhaeren, Les Heures claires (1896).

Spread across 5 rooms of Maison Hannon, the exhibition Echoes of Dreams remains open for visit.

The house encapsulates the fin-de-siècle spirit, in its ability to bring together, all the aesthetic, scientific and social aspiration, for dialogue between the arts, ideas, the sciences of an era in a state of transformation.
