Visit to the archives of the Boekentoren at Ghent University, where part of the archive of Philippe Van Snick is now sustainably preserved and available for research.

In 2024, the Philippe Van Snick Estate donated a first section of the artist’s archive to the University Library of Ghent University. The material documents the early decades of Van Snick’s artistic practice (1968–1990), a formative period in which he developed his work in Belgium and internationally.

The transferred archive consists of 110 folders containing correspondence, notes, sketches, invoices, press clippings, texts and published visual material. Together, they offer valuable insight into the evolution of Van Snick’s oeuvre and into the network of artists, critics, galleries and museums that surrounded him.

Consulting the archive
The physical and digital archive of Philippe Van Snick is preserved and managed by the Ghent University Library (Boekentoren). An inventory is available through the library catalogue under reference BHSL.HS.III.183.
The paper archive can be consulted in the Special Collections Reading Room during opening hours, and documents can be requested via the online catalogue.

What is the relation between Philippe Van Snick & Brazil?

This question is addressed in the group exhibition:
ENERGIA: artistice presence in the Belgian-Brazilian Landscape at TheMerode in Brussels. Curated by Benedicte Goesaert & Kathleen Weyts.

In 2015 Philippe Van Snick travelled to Brazil.

Both at Casa Modernista and MAM Rio, a dialogue was established between the works by Phillippe Van Snick and Daniel Steegmann Mangrané. At Casa Modernista, the very first modern house of all latinamérica, designed by Gregori Warchavchik, The garden was occupied by Philippe and the the private stances of the house by Daniel Steegmann Mangrané. These exhibitions were curated by Marta Mestre.

Philippe Van Snick has always been very fascinated by nature.
In Brazil he visited several botanical gardens and especially the Burl Marx garden inspired him. During that visit he took pictures that turned into a leporello with studies for paintings that would later in Belgium be painted and titled : Nature.

That series of paintings was for the first time shown at the exhibition Natureza Dinâmica at Nuno Centeno Gallery in Porto in 2018-2019. Four of the series of ten paintings are now on view at ENERGIA at TheMerode.

! ENERGIA is open to everyone during the RendezVous Weekend on September 6 & 7 !
ENERGIA is an initiative of GLEAN in collaboration with BENEDICTE

The Philippe Van Snick Estate wishes you beautiful holidays with joyful days and nights.

We have some nice memories about the last couple of months.
Herewith we like to highlight the participation at the exhibition:

+ Days + Nights
with work by Philippe Van Snick and Abraham Kritzman
at Elizabeth Xi Bauer Gallery in London

On June 6, a panel was organized together with the artist, Abraham Kritzman, Arnet reporter Jo Lawson-Tancred, and representative of the Philippe Van Snick Estate, Benedicte Goesaert. The panel was moderated by Verity Babbs.

The conversation was recorded and will be made available soon.

“You have a lot of freedom within a discipline, but there is a framework,”
the late Belgian artist Philippe Van Snick once said. Is the start of the essay written by Jo Lawson-Tancred.

Tomorrow '+ Days + Nights', an exhibition with the work of Philippe Van Snick and Abraham Kritzman, opens at the London based gallery Elizabeth Xi Bauer. This is the first time the artist's works will be in dialogue.

The title '+ Days + Nights' is a nod to Van Snick’s iconic series Dix Jours / Dix Nuits, which reflects the artist’s ongoing exploration of the duality of day and night, a central theme in his practice. The “+” symbol relates to geometry and composition, echoing a poetic narrative that aligns with the work of Abraham Kritzman, whose own art explores complex structures and themes through abstract expression.

This exhibition will be part of London Gallery Weekend 2025 (6th-8th June). As part of this, Elizabeth Xi Bauer will present a panel discussion in June, open to the public. More info will follow.

The Philippe Van Snick Estate wishes you a bright and joyfull 2025!

'Overgangen' (translates as 'Transitions') is a series of nine dyptichs that Philippe Van Snick made in 2019. Each canvas shows a curved shape, painted in one of the 10 colors in his color pallet (except for white), combined with his typical light blue.

The dyptichs in this series are very similar to a work he made two years before, titled 'Arcs', using the same arched forms and the color white.

Artists on Philippe Van Snick (3)

The Philippe Van Snick Estate invited Rein Dufait to share his memories on Philippe Van Snick. This resulted in an intimate written portrait on the relationship between both artists.

Rein Dufait (°1990) met Philippe Van Snick for the first time at the age of 19. Dufait cherishes warm memories of the brief encounters they had, especially those in which they exchanged artist’s books, a mutual interest of both artists.

“When we were together, surrounded by books, neither of us talked very much. I only had a small number of booklets that I brought with me, and he kept adding books and objects such as posters or small prints and editions from the past. I remember that one day Philippe offered me a whole bunch of these booklets. I was surprised by his generosity. From time to time, I take them out to examine them again. For me, this means more than big words. Therein was the freedom he showed me.”

Dufait points out the significance of Van Snick’s work to him:

“At first glance, Philippe’s work might be considered as something superficial, and I mean this without any negative meaning attached to it. I realize that when you don’t have enough knowledge about art, you may simply find it ‘beautiful', but there is a lot that escapes you. I might have been too young at the time, but I understand now that his work is actually the opposite of superficiality.”

“One needs a certain amount of knowledge to grasp the nature of Philippe’s art, and when I met him at 19, I simply wasn’t there yet. We passed each other briefly but not under ideal circumstances (if any exist).”

Van Snick and Dufait showed their work together during an exhibition at Tatjana Pieters in Ghent (2015). A few years later, Van Snick’s work was part of the exhibition ‘Schelp, zink, ruimte, wolk en overlap’ (2019) curated by Dufait in Oostende.

Currently, rein Dufait shows his work at

‘Zeven soorten onvoltooidheid / Seven Types of Unfinishedness’, published by , including a view of Philippe Van Snick's studio.

When is a work of art finished, done, terminated? In this essay, Christophe Van Gerrewey suggests that an artwork can be unfinished in seven ways: it is completed by the audience, it suggests a better world, the artist can’t leave it behind, it is a collective process, it reflects modesty, it is too utopian (for the time being), or its value has yet to be discovered.

The text is accompanied by Katrien Daemers' photographs of fifteen contemporary artists' studios, among which the one of Philippe Van Snick, capturing the (un)finished work while leaving the artists absent.

The Philippe Van Snick Estate is pleased that the work by Philippe Van Snick was selected by for this exhibition in the heart of the Flemish Ardennes.

From 1990 onward, Philippe Van Snick drew inspiration from nature on a regular basis. The work presented at 'en cours de route', illustrates how Van Snick extended his pure palette to a broader range of colours. It combines both his often-used geometrical forms and his well-known day (light blue) and night (black) motif, on the background of a French landscape.
