"Lapel Pins" by Songul Aral
Songül Aral, as an artist and academic who reinterprets Anatolia’s traditional jewelry culture through a contemporary design approach, establishes a unique jewelry language centered on the principle of sustainability in her exhibition “Lapel Pins.” Rooted in the local handicraft traditions of Malatya, her creations bring together the metal craftsmanship of the past with the discarded materials of the present. Everyday objects such as jar lids, wire fragments, bra support wires, buttons, threads, and buckles are transformed in her hands into contemporary brooches that reference the traditional Anatolian “tepelik” form.
Each of the artist’s fifteen original brooch designs carries its own meaning and was created in commemoration of the 102nd anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Türkiye. These small yet symbolically powerful works revive the head ornaments of the past as modern adornments for today’s collars. The “Lapel Pins” series constructs a narrative that reflects both the transformation of women in society and the cyclical continuity of nature. The revaluation of waste, the union of tradition and modernity, and the enduring presence of women’s labor form the common thread that unites these creations.
