Some aircraft are built to carry cargo. Others become part of history.

For decades, Mriya connected continents, delivered humanitarian aid, transported extraordinary loads and showed what Ukrainian engineering could achieve. Its flights took it around the world - from transporting emergency supplies to carrying equipment that no other aircraft could handle.

Today is also the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine who died defending the country’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. We remember those who gave their lives for the freedom of their homeland and carry their memory forward.

We remember. We honour. We dream. 🇺🇦

Do we still want to show Ukraine only through the stories that are easiest to explain?

For Ukraine’s Independence Day, we have curated a programme of five short films by young Ukrainian filmmakers who refuse to offer simple answers.

These films turn to home archives, personal memories, everyday life, self-irony, doubts, and the search for a language of their own. They capture fragile moments that gradually become a memory of today’s Ukraine.

Together, they create a portrait of a generation living inside a great historical moment - while refusing to let it become the only story told about them.

We will present the programme on 22 August at 19:15 as part of the VYR Festival, taking place in Ghent from 21 to 23 August.

Come discover five different perspectives on contemporary Ukraine - intimate, honest, and far from the familiar narratives.

It was a pleasure to spend the day with such a curious, creative, and enthusiastic group of young participants. We hope this workshop inspired them to look at storytelling and filmmaking from a new perspective.

A huge thank you to «СУМ» for inviting us and making this collaboration possible. We loved being part of it, and we hope to do it again soon! 💙💛

Congratulations to “Réunion de Famille” by Jean Forest, winner of the Mriya International Film Festival Audience Award.

Chosen by our audience among the competition programmes, the film deeply resonated with viewers through its delicate and intimate exploration of memory, family archives, and absence. Using Super 8 footage, personal testimonies, and fragments of family history, the film becomes both a personal journey and a reflection on how cinema can revive forgotten lives and reconnect fragmented memories.

We sincerely thank all filmmakers, participants, guests, and viewers who became part of this edition of the festival. Through your presence, conversations, and emotional responses, these films continue to live far beyond the screen. 💜
