Bram Bogart (1921–2012),
best known for his transforming painting into a physical, sculptural experience.
As a self‑taught artist, he first explored a figurative style close to Flemish Expressionism before shifting toward a form of abstraction inspired by the spontaneity of Japanese calligraphy.
After settling in Belgium, his work evolved drastically: He developed ultra‑thick pigment mixtures, almost like cement, which he applied with trowels onto reinforced panels. His palette, once dominated by dark tones, gradually opened to bright, vibrant, and contrasting colors.
Here, paint becomes pure matter.
