Overtoon

Overtoon Overtoon is an artist-run platform for practitioners working with sound. There are no calls for projects.

Overtoon offers two types of residencies: production residencies and research residencies. While production residents are invited to work in our studios up to a year in order to deliver a work of art that Overtoon will present in its network, research residents can find a spot in our studios for a shorter amount of time in order to investigate an aspect of their work that is related to sound. Inst

ead, artists can contact Overtoon for research residencies on a flexible basis. On the other hand, production residencies are based on an ongoing dialogue with artists involved in the Overtoon network. With the support of Flanders State of the Art, the Flemish Community Commission in Brussels and the Creative EU Programme.

New resident! We warmly welcome Chantal Michelle to Overtoon for a production residency, where she will continue working on her installation A Vulnerable Landscape. Chantal Michelle is a composer and interdisciplinary artist whose work engages with the spatial, tactile, and perceptual dimensions of sound. Her practice incorporates feedback systems, multichannel compositions, and psychoacoustic phenomena to explore the mutability of perception and its capacity to be disrupted or reconstructed. Her projects include site-responsive installations, hand-blown glass instruments, conceptual scores, and recorded material.

We are very much looking forward to having her in Brussels over the coming weeks!

Nieuwe resident!

New resident at Overtoon HQ! We welcome Ewoud Van Eetvelde .e, an electroacoustic composer, installation artist, and professional guitarist based in Brussels, for a residency to continue his work on ‘Dromentuin’. Over the past years, his artistic work has evolved toward exploring sound and composition as architecture— as a space that can be hospitable and transformative through collective listening. Blending computational synthesis and microphone recordings, his practice merges environments that oscillate between worldly and the virtual.

Overtoon Residencies:

We’re very excited to welcome Grace Villamil to the Overtoon workspace from December 2nd to 11th!

About her time with us, Grace writes:
“In residency, I will trace physical routes of meaning in Brussels: between a temporary domestic home, Jose Rizal's apartment (the Philippines's national hero) where he wrote El Filibusterismo (‘The Subversion’), through squares, and Overtoon. This information will be translated into sound, creating a sonic diary of the absorption process. Overtoon will be instrumental in my ongoing research on domestication - of sound, ourselves, & the corralling of vibration; ley lines; my mom's pantyhose; and what it is to connect to our origin.”

Grace Villamil is an interdisciplinary artist based in New Jersey. Through sound, video, performance, and material her works concern the personal history and physicality of embodied sound and its phenomena. Creating regenerative systems, along with themes related to noise, play, ancestral excavation, and temporality constitute the core of her practice. Current projects include, Mumulak; Interaural Space, a community installation turned radio show on WPRB centered on noise, migration, and oral histories; ⎤⎤⎤, an experimental noise duo; & Drab.

Overtoon Residencies:

We’re very excited to welcome QOA and Primeiro to the Overtoon workspace from November 18th to November 21st!

About their time with us:

“Inspired by the concept of animism, ‘Feed the River’ begins with the premise that rivers are living beings, and like all beings they need to be nourished. In previous projects, we have used sound as a medium to engage with rivers, ‘nourishing’ them with music. This approach has proved transformative in reimagining rivers as sentient entities. We are particularly interested in the interconnections between sound and ecological consciousness, and in exploring how sound can foster dialogue between humans and non-humans. A river is a partner in reciprocal exchange.”

QOA .koa works with listening as a tool to tune into the environment and our own being, centering on the materiality of sound as a vibrational existence that occupies, moves, and traverses the air around us. They generate expanded listening bodily experiences that invite us to immerse ourselves in floating time. Their sound ranges from minimal frequencies, processed field recordings, live sampling of acoustic objects, spoken word, synthesis, & rhythmic spectral convolutions. QOA is part of AMPLIFY Digital Arts Initiative. Their music & installations have been presented widely internationally. Their upcoming album "Sauco" will be released by Leaving Records.

Primeiro .segundo is an experimental electronic musician from Buenos Aires. His music transcends conventional boundaries, delving into the realms of ambient, hand-made trance, and beyond. While his work may initially evoke a sense of tranquility akin to artists like Hiroshi Yoshimura, a closer examination reveals the intricate layers and meticulous arpeggios. In 2023, he released his first album, "Music for Horses," with the Berlin-based label Danzee. He has shared stages with various artists, including Jeff Mills, Caterina Barbieri, Jan Jelinek, and Upsammy. Additionally, he organizes Feed the River festival hosted in Hamburg, Chemnitz, and Berlin.

Overtoon Residencies:

We are very excited to welcome Samuel Hertz to the Overtoon workspace for a residency from November 4th to 15th!

For his November 2024 residency at Overtoon, Samuel writes:
“[I] experiment with, upend and subvert the sensory instrumentation of environmental conservation research. Through recasting these environmental sensors as performative instruments, ‘autoethnographies’ of these devices are created, uncovering how they distort time and space through their particular sensing paradigms, and interrogating the gaps, overlaps and incongruencies of datafied sound. What can we learn about listening when sound is rendered as data, and what sonic worlds evade or resist sensing?”

Samuel Hertz is a Berlin-based composer and researcher working with sound-sensing networks of environmental science research, whose works span electronic music, interstellar radio transmissions, deep sea broadcasts, and doom metal concerts. His work has been exhibited and performed in the Ars Electronica Festival (AT), Haus der Kulturen der Welt (DE), Palais de Tokyo (FR), Akademie der Künste (DE), Pioneer Works/Wave Farm (US), the Onassis Foundation (GR), Kunstmuseum Bonn (DE), National Science + Media Museum (UK), BBC3 (UK), and the International Space Station, among others. Samuel is a PhD candidate at Royal Holloway University of London Centre for GeoHumanities, and the author of a number of publications and talks on sound, environmental violence, and multispecies ecologies. www.samhertzsound.com

Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman - "that which is heard, that which is remembered pt. 1"

Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman as a part of OORtreders Festival 2024
Saturday, October 19th, 2024 at 10:00 in the Theatergebouw Dommelhof (Zwarte Doos)

"that which is heard, that which is remembered pt. 1" is the first draft of a new performative installation by Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman. The audience is welcome to flop down amongst the intimate quadraphonic set-up for a ca****la duet, shruti box and speakers. The acoustic, spatial, tactile and material sensation of sound prevails in this surround sensorial experience, fully attuned to the rhythmic breath of the shruti box and the performers themselves.

For Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman, 2024 is a year of artistic rebirth. All the way back to the core and origins of her sound and voice art and to figuring out how she explores new artistic paths from there. Thus, almost by accident, she discovered the simple and complex beauty of the shruti box: a small and compact, ancient organ and perhaps an acoustic precursor of the modular analogue synthesiser. Lierman and Wouters make the shruti box’s bellows work like a mechanical lung, bringing the shruti box to life, letting it breathe and allowing endless minimalist harmonies and textures to weave and resonate with each other like a musical loom, with the voice as the common thread.

Composition: Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman
Performers: Denis Wouters and Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman

Overtoon Residencies:

We are very excited to welcome Kristina Warren to the Overtoon workspace for a brief residency from September 27th to 28th!

For their Fall 2024 residency at Overtoon, Kristina Warren will first lead several free, public text score workshops featuring various approaches to listening and gently sounding in dialogue with the surroundings. [❗Look out for logistical information in our stories❗] These workshops will then open up to conversation exploring the role of documentation, field recording, and other material pathways of listening and sounding. Warren’s Fall 2024 European tour includes a variety of listening- and discussion-based events, and thus this Overtoon residency features specially as a way of understanding the unique role of sound and sound art in Brussels.

Kristina Warren .sound is US-based sound artist working with acoustic, analog, and digital sound in a variety of contexts, generally highlighting the ebbs and flows of listening attention. Recently, Warren’s 8-channel installation Lavender Lauds was presented at MuseumsQuartier Vienna in collaboration with TONSPUR Kunstverein Wien (2023), and her audiovisual piece Three Rivulets won Best Instrumental Piece at the FRINGEPVD Festival (2024). Currently a MacColl Johnson Fellow via the Rhode Island Foundation (2024) and previously Visiting Assistant Professor at Brown University (2017-21), Warren holds a PhD in electronic music composition (U. Virginia, 2017).
