Belgium U16 Talent Pool Shows Great Promise at International Tournament in Geleen
Last weekend, from Friday through Sunday, the Belgium U16 Boys National Talent Pool participated in an international tournament in Geleen, Netherlands. As in previous years, the tournament featured strong competition from the Dutch National Team, Krefeld (Germany), and Aosta (Italy).
Belgium started the tournament in impressive fashion, winning four out of five qualification games and showing exciting, high-level hockey throughout the weekend.
The Belgian boys opened the tournament on Friday with a strong 5-3 victory against the Dutch National Team, followed later that day by a convincing 3-0 win over Aosta from Italy.
On Saturday, Belgium played two back-to-back games. The team defeated Krefeld 4-1 before narrowly losing 4-6 in a hard-fought rematch against the Netherlands.
Overall, Team Belgium displayed excellent hockey, showcasing the great potential within this talented group of players and giving a strong indication of a very competitive U18 National Team for next season.
On Sunday morning, Belgium faced the Netherlands again in the semifinal. After taking an early 3-0 lead in the first period, the Dutch team managed to fight back and level the score at 3-3. However, the Belgian boys showed great character and determination, finishing the game with an impressive 5-3 victory to secure their place in the tournament final.
In the final, Belgium once again faced Aosta, the team they had defeated earlier in the tournament. The Italian side started strongly, and Belgium had to play some of their best hockey of the weekend to stay in the game. The exciting final ended with a narrow 2-1 victory for Aosta, crowning the Italian team tournament champions.
Coach Ben Boute can look back very positively on a successful talent pool weekend in the Netherlands. He saw a great deal of potential within the squad and is confident in the future of the Belgian national program. Many of these players are expected to receive invitations for the U18 tryout and selection days at the start of next season.
These excellent results are also a reflection of the outstanding work being done within the Belgian National Talent Pool Program at U14, U15, and U16 level. Many of these players have already been developing and competing together for more than three years, creating strong team chemistry, identity, and understanding on and off the ice.
The success in Geleen proves that this is far more than simply selecting talented players for a tournament — it is the result of building a true national team through long-term development, commitment, and structured guidance. The Talent Pool Program deserves tremendous credit for helping shape the future of Belgian ice hockey and for continuing to push the national program forward year after year.
Congratulations to all players, coaches, staff, and everyone involved in the development pathway for representing Belgium with pride!
