The gallery works closely with small roster of artists, hosting an annual program of solo shows, performances, artist editions, salons and thematic group shows. 'A nice place to make discoveries'

Eva Steynen.Deviation(s) was founded in 2013. Situated in the upcoming east-side of Antwerp, on the ground floor of a 19th century mansion with a garden, the gallery is known as a nice place to make discoveries. Eva Steynen works closely with a small group of mid-career and emerging artists, Belgian based and international, and presents an annual program of solo shows, performances, artist editions, salons and thematic group projects. The visitor is invited to discover, reflect and connect. After having realized various exhibition projects as a nomadic independent curator in Antwerp, Eva Steynen established the gallery in her parental home. Next to the solo shows, the rather curatorial projects evolve from a philosophical enquiry and a curiosity for aspects of the event in the artist’s act. Building a sustainable trust-based relation between artists and gallerist, the latter being a care-taker for the arts, the purpose is 'to grow well together'. To aim and think together by organizing and creating a connection between artists, gallery, collectors, curators and art lovers. The commercial aspects of a gallery may never invade the artistic process, hence Eva Steynen.Deviation(s) distinguishes itself by rather risk-taking and curatorial shows often with a museal character. Eva Steynen.Deviation(s) is a member of Antwerp Art and co-organiser of BORGER, a dynamic group of galleries and art institutions in the north and east district of Antwerp. Represented artists: Marie Julia Bollansée, Francis Denys, Benoît Félix, Laure Forêt, Aurélie Gravas, Nick Hullegie, Fred Michiels, Marieke Van Wuytswinkel.

The first solo exhibition in Belgium by Japanese artist Ken’ichiro Taniguchi.

A crack in a wall. A dent in a surface. A small irregularity in the city.

Ken’ichiro Taniguchi calls these traces Hecomi. By carefully tracing their contours, he gives form to details that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Through cutting, folding and joining, the traced shapes become three-dimensional sculptures — each retaining a connection to the place where it was found.

A shift in scale, and a different way of looking at our surroundings.

For his Antwerp project, Taniguchi transforms cracks, dents and depressions found at the city’s former fortifications into a series of vivid yellow sculptures. Each sculpture originates from a Hecomi discovered at a specific site, translating an often-overlooked trace into a new, three-dimensional form.

Presented together, the sculptures reveal a surprising dialogue between the city’s material history and Taniguchi’s distinctive artistic practice. 'The Antwerp Hecomi Map' connects each work to the place from which its form originated.

For his Antwerp project, aerial photographs of the city drew Taniguchi’s attention to the star-shaped moats of the Brialmont forts and other surviving fortifications.
Visiting these sites, he explored the surrounding areas and collected 'Hecomi' from roads, walls and other man-made surfaces. Each collected 'Hecomi' became the starting point for an individual sculpture, translating the contours of a specific trace into a new, three-dimensional form.

'The Antwerp Hecomi Map' brings these individual discoveries together, connecting each sculpture to the specific location where its form originated. By linking the works to the remains of the city’s former fortifications, the map reveals an unexpected layer of Antwerp’s material history and invites visitors to look at familiar surroundings from a different perspective.

With only two weeks left to visit ‘This is Where I Left Myself’, we invite you to join us this Saturday for a live neo-Dadaist performance by Fred Michiels, together with Radio Enzon and other participants.

The performance brings readings from Michiels’ new collection of poems together with the music of Radio Enzon, the conceptual and futuristic art project of Rotterdam artist Evelien de Jong. Combining electroclash, post-punk and synth noise with a DIY energy, Radio Enzon imagines the sound of the fictional Planet Enzon.
