In Conversions, Belgian photographer Eddy Van Gestel transforms intimate historical correspondence into evocative photographic works that explore the emotional threads connecting us across time. Drawing inspiration from letters written by figures including Frida Kahlo, Vincent van Gogh, Georgia O’Keeffe, Marilyn Monroe, Napoleon Bonaparte, Kurt Cobain, Holly Butcher and many others, the series examines the universal experiences that define the human condition. 
Separated by centuries, cultures and circumstance, these voices speak with remarkable candour about love, grief, longing, loneliness, jealousy, hope and mortality. Rather than illustrating the letters, Van Gestel translates their emotional resonance into carefully constructed images where light, texture and ambiguity become the visual equivalents of language. 
The resulting works invite viewers to complete the narrative with their own memories and emotions. Conversions reflects on photography’s ability to transform written language into visual poetry and private emotion into shared experience.

Renowned photographer Eddy Van Gestel presents a unique body of work captured in infrared light, revealing a dimension and depth of color beyond our standard view. Created over the course of three years and inspired by famous letters, the series reflects on intimacy, connection, and what it means to be human.
It’s about you and me, it’s about us humans.

Emily Dickinson was an influential American poet who lived a deeply private and isolated life. In the spring of 1852, she wrote this letter to Susan Gilbert Dickinson, her sister-in-law and neighbor, with whom she shared an intimate and romantic relationship. Susan Gilbert is widely considered to have been brilliant and was probably the most important muse in Emily Dickinson’s life.

“This lighthouse is from a small town called Ushuaia, in the southernmost part of Argentina. Beyond it lies the Antarctic continent for those of us living in the northern hemisphere, this place feels like the very end of the world. I have always been fascinated by the idea of thresholds, the spaces where one reality meets another. Much of my work explores these boundaries, between day and night, where dawn and dusk exist, or between the mountains and the sea. Throughout my life, I have moved often, living both in the mountains and by the ocean. These experiences became a source of inspiration for my recent work Lighthouse.
