Born in Antwerp-Belgium, Viv was to go on to study pharmacy at the University of Antwerp where she met a large contingent of medical students from the US. Strong life time friend-ships were made and it inspired her to become a member of the AWCA (American Women’s Club of Antwerp) in 1977. During the early years of her membership of the AWCA she realized that there was a large gap in the market for assistance to expatriates moving to Belgium. Therefore she created a company “Belgian Relocation Center” which she successfully ran until it was sold in 2012 to an international corporation. She continued to head BRC until January 2016 to secure a flawless handover.
Remarkable about Viv is that she contracted polio at the age of three and spend five un-interrupted years in a hospital. She was left with life changing injuries and in the intervening decades had no less than 27 operations for complications arising from her illness. Although she learned to read and write in hospitals she was very persistent to make a success of her life. In her attempts to find her own path she became an accomplished interior decorator, fashion designer, florist but also won Master Chef of Flanders. In the 1980’s she becomes Mom to a twin boy and girl and starts her relocation company BRC. However, her marriage was not to survive and she became a single working mother. She successfully continued to grow and expand her business and raise her two children. She remarried in 2006 and has become a grandmother to four beautiful grandchildren. This goes to the character of the woman behind the paintings.
On retiring in 2016 Viv enrolled herself at the Royal Academy of Antwerp to study Art Exploration, Art Criticism & Cultural Sciences. Before 2016 Viv has never painted in her life because she simply never found the time in her busy life. She decides to take private painting lessons from her lifetime friend Firmin Janssens, a well-known Antwerp painter and pupil of Willem Dolphyn, with more than 50 years of experience in fine painting. Firmin familiarizes her with the traditional oil painting techniques of the old Flemish and Dutch Masters. With dedication and patience, he passes on his craftsmanship of these old painting techniques and assists her with her further development. This is clearly noticeable in the delicate and detailed brush technique of the works painted by Viv. After her mentors death in the fall of 2019 she is very determined to make her promise to him come true and make this another one of her success stories.
"I can not explain why I am so passionate and driven by painting but there is an irresistible craving to create authentic and poetic beauty which I hope will stir, emotionally touch and make people happy”. "Painting is a voyage of discovery and a struggle with yourself. The idea develops in your head, step by step you visualize it and then try to transfer beauty on the canvas. I paint what I feel , straight from the heart and it translates itself into a new creation”. While painting I feel an inner, almost spiritual calm that enables me to work in a focused and accurate manner. When my work is finished it feels like a personal victory and it gives me an incredible sense of joy and satisfaction.
