Playful, provocative and fiercely physical, 'The Fabliaux' tears apart theatrical conventions while exposing the absurdities and contradictions of contemporary society. Drawing from the scandalous comic tales of 13th-century France, the performance reinvents these ancient stories through a fiercely contemporary lens. Through grotesque humour and razor-sharp satire, an unsettling question arises: are we really more modern than the people who lived centuries ago?

BEHIND THE SCENES | A few more shared moments from our recent ‘An Encounter with Eugenio Barba’ at Troubleyn/Laboratorium, Antwerp.

For three days, performers, directors, theatre scholars, dramaturges, teachers, and students came together around questions of presence, rhythm, memory, and the actor’s craft — guided by the work of Eugenio Barba and Julia Varley.

The masterclass unfolded as both a training ground and a meeting point: a space where experiences, traditions, and artistic practices intersected across generations and cultures.

A wild, satirical and visually explosive theatrical experience inspired by the outrageous medieval fabliaux and the radical spirit of Dario Fo’s Mistero Buffo.

'The Fabliaux' plunges audiences into a whirlwind of grotesque comedy, physical transformation and biting satire, where the Middle Ages collide with the present day. Drawing from the scandalous comic tales of 13th-century France, the performance reinvents these ancient stories through a fiercely contemporary lens, revealing how little humanity has really changed.

In just a few days, Eugenio Barba and Julia Varley will arrive in Antwerp for an intensive three-day masterclass exploring performance, presence, dramaturgy, and the actor’s craft.
A central figure in contemporary theatre and founder of Odin Teatret (Eugenio Barba & Odin Teatret), Barba’s work has shaped generations of performers and directors worldwide through his research into theatre anthropology and intercultural performance practices.

The concluding session of the masterclass unfolds as a public demonstration and lecture, including the film Zona Limite and the demonstration The Flying Carpet.

Jan Fabre and Troubleyn / Jan Fabre Company are honoured to have received this award from the International Theatre Festival of Budapest (MITEM), presented at the National Theatre in Budapest (Nemzeti Színház), for the theatre performance 'I’M SORRY', created by Jan Fabre together with Stella Höttler.

This recognition adds to the nine international theatre awards that Troubleyn / Jan Fabre Company have been fortunate to receive over the past three years.
