DON’T MISS OUT – spaces are limited! | JAN FABRE TEACHING GROUP 5-DAY MASTERCLASSES this September at Teatro OUT OFF , Italy
Led by incredible teacher Giorgia Paolillo

MASTERCLASS DATES: SATURDAY 26 - WEDNESDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 2026
Masterclass conducted in Italian & English.

"The contemporary performer unites performance, theatre, and dance. Fabre always looks for physical impulses in and on the bodies of his performers and stimulates them to act on stage on the basis of those ‘real’ physical sensations. Fabre uses the expression ‘from act to acting’ to describe that process: the real physical impact (tension, pain stimulus, exhaustion, etc.) becomes part of what happens on stage. The physiological processes in the actor’s body radiate in the hall, as it were, so that the pain, tension, and exhaustion also affect the audience." - From: Prof Luk Van den Dries, "Het geopende lichaam", p. 110, published by De Bezige Bij, 2014

"The profound significance that emerges through Fabre’s movement between surrealism, metaphysics, and bodily visual shocks is captured in the images through the classical statuary quality of the bodies immortalized by Robert Mapplethorpe, while Helmut Newton’s photographs restore to us the objectivity of sensual, desiring, and hedonistic bodies. By contrast, Jorge Molder sought to capture the darkness of the soul as a metaphor for time and for being in the world, reflecting on the contemporary human condition, culminating in the iconic images of Dirk Braeckman, in which time appears profoundly slowed down." — Curator Giacinto Di Pietrantonio

In Loving Memory of Felix Schnieder-Henninger.

Felix Schnieder-Henniger left this world yesterday.

He met Jan Fabre and joined him as an assistant for 'Prometheus Landschaft', created at Künstlerhaus Bethanien as part of Berlin’s 1988 Cultural Capital programme. He was also part of the team for ''The Sound of One Hand Clapping (1990), which Fabre created for William Forsythe’s company, as well as for the theatre works Fabre created for Theater am Turm in 1989 and 1992.

Felix was an incredible source of energy, joy and depth. He believed in the power of art and beauty, and made them his life’s mission. 'Sweet Temptations'.

Fly high, dear Felix. May you rest in peace. You will be deeply missed.

- Sascha Siereveld | concertnews

FROM ACT TO ACTING — SECOND EDITION IN RUSSIAN NOW AVAILABLE! | Following an overwhelming response to the Russian-language release of 'From Act to Acting: Jan Fabre’s Guidelines for the Performer of the 21st Century', we are delighted to announce that the second edition is now available!

After the first printing sold out due to high demand, followed by subsequent reprints, 'From Act to Acting' returns in a new Russian edition with a new cover, published by Ripol/Palmira Publishers.

“A manifesto and a manual for performers, based on Jan Fabre’s extensive experience as a theatre artist and choreographer. This book sheds new light on the physical, mental and vocal training of the performer and furthermore gives insight into Fabre’s revolutionary thoughts on contemporary theatre.” — Luk Van den Dries

“This book compiles much of Fabre's wisdom, as much as it can be pressed into words and distributed as insights, exercises, and improvisations. He has arrived in his 60s as a master of theatre, of performance.” — Richard Schechner

With a preface by Richard Schechner and afterwords by Marina Abramović, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Romeo Castellucci.

Revisiting a landmark festival moment! | As this year's Salzburg Festival unfolds, we revisit 2007, when Jan Fabre became the first living artist commissioned to create a new work for the 'Felsenreitschule' at the Salzburger Festspiele | Salzburg Festival.

The resulting production, 'Requiem für eine Metamorphose (Requiem for a Metamorphosis)', was conceived especially for this iconic stage and premiered to widespread critical acclaim.

“Salzburg hasn't seen anything like it in a thousand years.”
— Jürgen Flimm, Intendant of the Salzburger Festspiele, De Morgen, 28 August 2007

“Fabre dramatizes death, to the fierce electronic music of composer Serge Verstockt's Requiem. The dance masters indicate the cadenza on an immense flower carpet, the cemetery above which butterflies and wasps flit around. Even though death remains a mystery, this is Fabre's way of penetrating reality, it is his own individual rite of passage in search of beauty.” — Paul Depont, ARTE, 6 September 2007

“Impressive and disquieting images in the Dance of Death spectacular, performed by a virtuoso cast.” — Bernhard Flieher, Salzburger Nachrichten, 28 August 2007

“Requiem für eine Metamorphose: images teeming with magical powers.” — Eva-Elisabeth Fischer, Süddeutsche Zeitung, 28 August 2007

“A memento mori as a hint to the baroque celebration of the living.” — Manuel Brug, Die Welt, 28 August 2007

Troubleyn / Jan Fabre congratulates the entire Salzburger Festspiele | Salzburg Festival team on this year’s edition, continuing a tradition of extraordinary encounters between artists, audiences, and iconic stages.

Participants will be working on exercises such as ‘Types':

"This improvisation starts from five types chosen from different categories: a profession, an icon, aggression, sexuality, spirituality…Time and again the performer is granted the opportunity to deliver his types with more precision, to pe*****te even deeper into the essence of it. The audience is the goal: they should be seized by each type, it is therefore crucial to project your energy to the front, to open up while playing, to coerce their attention, the type should be tingling on their retina, leaving behind a smoke cloud. Your own pleasure of playing, investing in intensity, articulation and precision are conditions to grab and hold the attention of the audience. PAINTED PASSAGES IN THE TROUBLEYN LABORATORIUM, ANTWERP: ODA JAUNE | A rare glimpse of ‘Above’ (2015), a monumental work by Oda Jaune (Sofia, 1979). The central subject of Oda Jaune’s painting is the human body, which undergoes all sorts of unsettling transformations in her canvases: tumor-like growths appear where the face should be, body parts change places, organs push to the surface like gleaming flowers … Jaune uses such images to explore themes like gender, illness, identity and sexuality. And yet a sort of poetry and beauty lurks in what at first glance appears uncomfortable: realities of our body, our emotions and our dreams are here freed of their complexes and shown with loving acceptance.

In Troubleyn’s theatre auditorium, for ‘Above’ (2015) she painted a wingless angel who appears to have been born from the wall itself. He plunges headlong into the space: is he flying, or is he falling? Visible only from behind the balcony railings, the angel does not address the audience – but the actors. A powerful image of leaping, risk, and the art of rising above oneself.

“These are images by diverse yet legendary photographers, united by the desire to highlight Fabre’s unmistakable sense of mark-making. Polished photographic surfaces that nevertheless scratch the viewer because, as Paul Valéry wrote, ‘the deepest thing is the skin.’” — Curator Giacinto Di Pietrantonio

Now on view at the Bernardini Library, Polo Biblio-Museale di Lecce, JAN FABRE. BORROWED TIME accompanies the opening of the JAN FABRE ARCHIVE AND TEACHING CENTRE in Lecce, curated by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio.

Featuring more than 200 works by Jan Fabre alongside photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe, Helmut Newton, Dirk Braeckman, and Jorge Molder, the exhibition invites visitors into a world of metamorphosis, memory, life, death, and renewal.

Pictured here is one of the remarkable photographs created by Dirk Braeckman for Jan Fabre’s Swan Lake (2002), produced for the Royal Ballet of Flanders. In Braeckman’s iconic images, as Di Pietrantonio writes, “time appears profoundly slowed down,” capturing the suspended, dreamlike quality that runs throughout Fabre’s theatrical universe.
