Currently on view: ‘Bittersweet’ by Christopher Thomas
For his decades-long project ‘Bittersweet’, Thomas has been photographing desolate places and objects across various countries and continents, including the United States, Ukraine, Germany and Tenerife. His photographic practice is rooted in a documentary approach, incorporating subtle elements of staging while remaining largely faithful to the sites he encounters. His visual worlds revolve around themes of decay and transience, focusing on places where something once existed but no longer does, and where the passage of time and change have left their mark.
“This series is about feelings: sad ones, happy ones and everything in between. It is melancholic and warm. It is about joy and fear, it is about gain and loss, it is about the beginning and the end of life and the whole time in between. It is about time and how everything changes within it. As we do, too.” — Christopher Thomas
