With the summer holidays now behind us and new acquisitions coming in every week, we are looking forward to our first event of the season: Brussels Art Square. Held from 24 - 27 September at the Sablon, the heart of the Brussels art and antiques trade, this iconic event features over 60 local and international dealers showcasing specialties that span more than 4.000 years of art history.

Theobald Michau was born in Tournai in 1676. Between 1686 and 1698 he is recorded in Brussels, where he was taught by the landscape painter Lucas Achtschellink. By 1710 the painter had moved to Antwerp, where he was recorded in the local Guild of St Luke that year. He lived and worked in Antwerp for the rest of his life.

Michau painted genre scenes and landscapes, and may generally be considered to be a follower of David II Teniers and Jan I Brueghel. His oeuvre consists mostly of small cabinet paintings on copper and panel, of which the present signed work depicting peasants walking home at night is a particularly fine example.

[MUSEUM SALE]

With the renewed interest in Greek mythology and Homer’s Odyssey following the recent release of Christopher Nolan’s epic, it seems fitting that this drawing has recently found a permanent home at the Château de Fontainebleau

The sheet, which was done after a fresco by Primaticcio and Niccolo Dell’Abate in the Galerie d’Ulysse at Fontainebleau by the Antwerp artist Theodoor van Thulden in the early 1630’s, depicts the return of Odysseus to Ithaca. Kissing the ground of his homeland, our hero is approached by the wily goddess Athena, who points him towards the hut of his old friend, the swine herd Eumaios.

Van Thulden drew copies of all 58 frescoes in the Galerie, which he subsequently published as “Les Travaux d’Ulysse” in Paris in 1633. There are very few extant drawings from the series, though there is one in the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, CA, depicting Odysseus regaling Penelope with the stories of his adventures (inv./cat.nr E.B. Crocker Collection 1871.940).

Like Odysseus, our drawing has taken a while to come home. As the Galerie d’Ulysse was demolished in 1739, it is wonderful to see a memento of this lost masterpiece of art history return to the place where it was created. We congratulate the museum and its curators on this beautiful purchase.

[MUSEUM SALE]

We are excited to announce the sale, concluded during the Salon du Dessin last March, of our wonderful botanical sheet by the Dutch artist Jan Christiaan Sepp (1739 - 1811) to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

A rare surviving design for a plate in the fourth volume of Sepp’s book series, titled “Beschouwing der wonderen Gods”, our sheet is the first by the artist to enter the collections of the museum. Our thanks go out to the Rijksmuseum and its curators and we congratulate them on their fine purchase.

Out of the many new acquisitions which will be on view during our upcoming Open Gallery Weekend, this recently rediscovered drawing by the Antwerp painter Frans Snijders (1579 - 1657) is one of my current favourites.

A preparatory drawing for a painting now kept in the , our sheet - besides being a rarity in itself - is a testament to the great draughtsmanship of the artist. Come and see this and other treasures next week!

[MUSEUM SALE]

We are proud to share the first in a number of museum acquisitions following our inaugural participation in the in March.

Following its recent rediscovery in a Dutch private collection, Abraham van Diepenbeeck’s “Sheet of figure studies” was swiftly sold to the Frits Lugt Collection at the in Paris. Executed on the back of a letter written to the artist during his time in Paris, the drawings gives us a beautiful insight into van Diepenbeeck’s day-to-day working process.
