The final artist of Sculptural III — and a truly exceptional one.

We are delighted to conclude our series of 11 participating artists with Johannes Nagel, one of the most distinguished artists represented by NQ Gallery.

Following his remarkable solo exhibition with us just a few months ago, Nagel returns with another captivating work — a sculpture that once again challenges our understanding of the vessel and the relationship between interior and exterior.

Johannes Nagel is a sculptor, exploring the possibilities of a vessel. His work ranges in size from the sitting-room scale to the monumental. Rather than closing onto themselves, Nagel’s vessels appear at times to be sliced and cut open at their extremities. In the case of these containers full of holes, the interior competes with and complements the exterior, they resist the very idea of “containing”.

Born in 1979, Nagel studied at the University of Art and Design Burg Giebichenstein, where he is also an assistant professor. He began his career as a potter as an apprentice to Japanese-born Canadian ceramist Kinya Ishikawa in Val-David, Quebec.

Today, his work is exhibited and collected internationally, with works held in distinguished museum collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, The Ariana, and the Keramion.

This is the final weekend to experience the works of all artists participating in Sculptural III. The exhibition remains on view until Sunday, August 30.

Gallery opening hours:

SCULPTURAL III is here!

Over the coming weeks, leading up to the end of August, we will introduce the 11 participating artists of Sculptural III, presenting two artists each week alongside their featured works.

Tom Volkaert

Tom Volkaert’s sculptural work is a testimony to the materiality of memory as much as it is an ongoing tribute to the spiritual and shamanic force of art.

Born in Antwerp in 1989, Volkaert’s sculptural work is a carefully balanced combination of refined artistic craftsmanship and the strategic use of unpredictability that comes into play when working with enameled ceramics, epoxy, or oxidized metal.

Tom is a sculptor who creates monumental sculptures that combine classical sculptural traditions with a powerful, contemporary visual language. Working primarily in natural stone, he explores the material's expressive potential by centering his work on tension, movement, and monumentality.

His sculptures demonstrate exceptional technical mastery and an ongoing dialogue between craftsmanship and experimentation.

Whether in public spaces or exhibition settings, his work emphasizes the physical presence and timeless power of sculpture.

We look forward to welcoming you to Sculptural III

Celebration of The Ordinary Luminous

What a memorable afternoon celebrating the book presentation of The Ordinary Luminous by Erwin Keustermans.

The interest in Erwin’s work and in the book was simply overwhelming. It was wonderful to see so many people come together to discover, experience and celebrate his unique artistic vision.

The powerful exhibition, together with the book, was given an extra layer of depth by the thoughtful words of Bob van Eerd.

The publication is enriched by the contributions of Manfred Sellink, Frank Vande Veire, Tom McGlynn and Bob van Eerd, each offering a distinctive perspective that adds to the depth and meaning of The Ordinary Luminous.

A special word of appreciation goes to Marleen Keustermans, whose dedication and commitment made the realization of this beautiful book possible.

A book, an exhibition, many voices — and an extraordinary afternoon celebrating art, reflection and the luminous qualities hidden within the ordinary.

Congratulations to Erwin Keustermans and everyone who contributed to bringing The Ordinary Luminous to life.

SCULPTURAL III is here!

Over the coming weeks, leading up to the end of August, we will introduce the 11 participating artists of Sculptural III, presenting two artists each week alongside their featured works.

Joke Raes is a Belgium-based artist who works internationally. In 2024, she won the Art Prize at Ceramic Brussels, earning her a two-month artist residency at Fondation L’Accolade in Paris. She completed her studies at HISK (Higher Institute for Fine Arts) in Ghent in 2016.

Raes works in various media, including drawings, watercolors, ceramics, installations, performances, and sculptures. Her work explores themes such as duality of identity, the fragility and beauty of existence, tension and balance within images, and the concept of “imaginary walks” or encouraging people to collect “love water.”

Each piece appears to emerge spontaneously, yet upon closer inspection, it reveals astonishing precision. She developed her ceramic work during residencies at Sundaymorning@EKWC in the Netherlands and in Arita, Saga, Japan.

In 2017, Raes began her ongoing series of porcelain masks, Mask x. These masks reflect both her theater background and her reflections on fluid identity; each mask is given a unique name and identity by its owner. This series plays with the ambiguity and fragility of identity, exploring the tension between revealing and concealing.

Join us on Sunday, August 16 at 4:00 PM for the official presentation of THE ORDINARY LUMINOUS, the new publication by Erwin Keustermans, created to accompany his acclaimed solo exhibition currently on view in the HF Room.

Meet the artist, discover the exhibition, and leave with a personally signed copy of THE ORDINARY LUMINOUS. While the book is already available through our website, there's nothing quite like having it signed by the artist himself.

We invite you to take your time to experience the exhibition before the presentation. NQ Gallery is open Thursday through Saturday from 11 AM to 6 PM, and Sunday from 2 PM to 6 PM.

The response to Erwin Keustermans' exhibition has been overwhelming, with works finding new homes at an impressive pace. If you have your eye on one of his remarkable paintings, don't wait too long—you may miss the opportunity to make it yours.

For those wishing to delve deeper into both the exhibition and the publication, art writer Yves Joris has written a wonderful feature for Gallery Viewer. We highly recommend reading it:

We look forward to welcoming you for an inspiring afternoon celebrating art, books, and conversation.

Over the coming weeks, leading up to the end of August, we will introduce the 11 participating artists of Sculptural III, presenting two artists each week alongside their featured works.

Folkert de Jong (1972, Egmond aan Zee, NL) lives and works in Amsterdam.
Folkert graduated from the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten Amsterdam in 2000.

He made an international name with his life-size sculptures in chemical high-tech materials that are mainly used for household tools and the manufacturing industry. The bright colours and the light weight of the foam sculptures deliberately confuse the viewer with an apparent lightness that is at odds with their sinister subject. The grotesque figures are an unorthodox means to highlight themes such as mortality and decay.

Folkert showed a monumental installation at Art Basel Unlimited and had a solo exhibition in 2023 in Kunsthal KAde.

His sculptures have been collected by Centre for Visual Arts, Dordrecht (NL); GEM Museum for Contemporary Art, Den Haag (NL); Groninger Museum, Groningen (NL); Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University (USA); Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles (USA); The Plancius Collection, Amsterdam (NL); Middelheim Museum, Antwerp (NL); and The Saatchi Collection, London (UK).

Folkert de Jong is represented by Gallery Sofie Van de Velde, Antwerpen.

SCULPTURAL III is here!

Over the coming weeks, leading up to the end of August, we will introduce the 11 participating artists of Sculptural III, presenting two artists each week alongside their featured works.

What better way to start the week then presenting the co-curator of SCULPTURAL III and NQ gallery artist Nick Ervinck !

Nick Ervinck (°1981) is a contemporary Belgian artist whose work includes massive installations, handmade and 3D printed sculptures, ceramics, prints, drawings, computer graphics and animated films.

In 2003, Ervinck graduated from KASK (Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Ghent) with a Master’s degree in Mixed Media. Ever since, he specialized in computer modeling and implemented new 3D techniques. While pushing the possibilities of digital media to their limits, he created new architectural forms that were not achievable up to now.

His work has been acquired by art collectors around the world and shown in large numbers of solo and group exhibitions. Outside Europe, Ervinck took his first steps with group exhibitions in UNArt Center, Shanghai; MOCA, Shanghai; Axiom, Tokyo; Oya Stone Mine, Tokyo; Northern Arizona University Art Museum, Flagstaff and Chamber, New York.

Delphine Courtillot creates sculptures and installations centered on organic growth, transformation, and vulnerability.

Her work occupies the space between the natural and the artificial and is characterized by a refined attention to material, texture, and spatiality. Adopting a sculptural approach, she explores processes of change and the fragile relationship between humans and their environment.

Her installations create tranquil landscapes that invite a sensory experience.

Over the coming weeks, leading up to the end of August, we will introduce the 11 participating artists of Sculptural III, presenting two artists each week alongside their featured works.

Anne Marie Laureys is one of the most important Belgian ceramic artists of her generation.

Starting from the traditional potter's wheel, she develops sculptural forms that are distorted, folded, and built up into organic compositions during the making process. Her work balances between ceramics and autonomous sculpture, characterized by strong tactility, rich surface texture, and a keen sensitivity to form.

Laureys exhibits internationally, and her work is included in numerous museum collections, including Design Museum Gent, the Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
