Shirley Villavicencio Pizango, The Snake and the Fox (2026).

In her paintings, Shirley Villavicencio Pizango weaves together personal memory, cultural symbolism and emotional reflection. Figures, animals and objects coexist within vibrant compositions, creating scenes that feel both intimate and allegorical.

In The Snake and the Fox, meaning remains deliberately open. The animals appear not merely as subjects, but as carriers of association and emotion, inviting multiple readings. As throughout her practice, Villavicencio Pizango balances tenderness and tension, allowing the work to move between the personal and the universal.

The painting forms part of A Tear for Power, her third solo exhibition with the gallery, opening on June 27.

Shirley Villavicencio Pizango.

Alongside her paintings, a new series of ceramic vases forms an integral part of A Tear for Power. These sculptural works extend the themes of the exhibition into three-dimensional space, introducing a physical presence that complements the intimacy of the paintings.

Like her portraits, the vases carry traces of memory, identity and transformation. They embody a quiet dialogue between the personal and the symbolic, inviting viewers to move through the exhibition not only visually, but spatially. Together, they contribute to the contemplative atmosphere that defines this new body of work.

Featured works:

Ceramic vase, 58 x 30 cm
Ceramic vase, 60 x 38 cm
Ceramic vase, 60 x 32 cm
Ceramic vase, 61 x 25 cm

Final week to visit The Way Things Settle by Bernd Lohaus.

This exhibition brings together a selection of works that highlight the openness, vulnerability and quiet intensity that define Bernd Lohaus’ practice. Through pigment, gesture and material, the works invite a slower way of looking, one grounded in attention, presence and experience.

At the centre of the exhibition are the reenacted pigment works from the 1970s, allowing visitors to encounter a dynamic and lesser-known aspect of Lohaus’ oeuvre. Together, the works reveal an artist whose practice remains remarkably relevant in its openness to chance, transformation and dialogue.

Visit the exhibition during its final week.

On view until June 21, 2026.

Final week to visit The Wunderwall Enlarged.

Over the past weeks, The Wunderwall Enlarged has slowly transformed. As artworks found new homes with collectors, empty spaces began to appear across the walls. What may seem like absence becomes part of the exhibition itself, a reminder that art continues to live beyond the gallery, entering new contexts and new conversations.

What began as a floor-to-ceiling constellation of voices now carries visible traces of exchange, discovery and connection. The changing walls reflect the very idea at the heart of The Wunderwall: supporting artists, creating encounters and allowing works to continue their journey.

Visit the exhibition during its final week and experience this evolving presentation in its current form.

On view until June 21, 2026.

Shirley Villavicencio Pizango’s third solo exhibition with the gallery, A Tear for Power, opens on June 27.

In A Tear for Power, Villavicencio Pizango presents a new body of work exploring the fragile boundary between self-image and self-absorption. Through intimate self-portraits and emotionally charged compositions, the exhibition approaches narcissism not as vanity, but as a vulnerable desire for recognition, control and love.

Drawing from personal memory, cultural symbolism and everyday encounters, her paintings balance tenderness with confrontation. The works invite viewers into a world where vulnerability and power become inseparable, revealing the emotional complexity that lies beneath the surface of identity.

Alongside the paintings, a selection of ceramic vases expands the exhibition into the physical space, reinforcing the contemplative atmosphere that runs throughout the presentation.

Edouard Devriendt on painting, emotion and transformation.

For Devriendt, every painting begins with an image, but the real question lies elsewhere: when does an image become a painting? Through gesture, material and the physical presence of paint, he searches for moments where a work moves beyond its photographic source.

The works presented in The Wunderwall Enlarged are part of this ongoing investigation, while also serving as a space where emotions, thoughts and anxieties can take form. “Painting has become a kind of therapy,” he reflects, a way of placing feelings onto the canvas and, ultimately, looking back at them from a distance.

Now on view as part of The Wunderwall Enlarged at Gallery Sofie Van de Velde through 21 June 2026.

Devriendt will also present a solo exhibition in our Project Space this September.

Opening June 27: Gallery Sofie Van de Velde presents Pop Art, a group exhibition curated by .steenbeke_van.de.velde

This summer, Gallery Sofie Van de Velde presents its first large-scale Pop Art exhibition in the main gallery space. Curated by Henri Steenbeke, the exhibition brings together a vibrant selection of works that demonstrate how art from the past can remain surprisingly fresh, playful and relevant today.

By engaging with a rich artistic history through a contemporary lens, Henri Steenbeke offers a renewed perspective on one of the most influential movements of the twentieth century. As a third-generation gallerist, he approaches Pop Art not as a historical chapter, but as a living visual language that continues to shape the way we see the world around us.

Created in collaboration with Henri Steenbeke / Van de Velde, the exhibition unfolds as a graphic and energetic summer presentation, celebrating the bold imagery, humour and cultural impact that define Pop Art.

Last Friday, we were delighted to welcome so many visitors to the gallery for the opening of this special exhibition, presented in the context of Antwerp Fashion Festival. Bringing together 155 original design drawings, the exhibition offers a unique insight into the imagination, freedom and visual language that have shaped Walter Van Beirendonck’s practice for decades.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate this occasion and share in the opening weekend.

For those who could not attend, Draw The World Awake remains on view until June 21, 2026. We warmly invite you to visit the exhibition and discover these remarkable works firsthand.
