PLAYING THIS WEEK IN ANTWERP: Love & Loss! Opera Ballet Vlaanderen presentss three moving dance performances in one evening.
The program opens with Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s choreography to Bach’s Second Cello Suite from the performance Mitten wir im Leben sind staged by Julien Monty. Next follows William Forsythe Quintet with collaboration from the original cast, staged by Stefanie Arndt and Thierry Guiderdoni, a choreography considered one of his absolute masterpieces.
Finally, the company presents a new creation by choreographers Tiffany Tregarthen and David Raymond of Out Innerspace In Only Light Years Away, they explore the thresholds of the body and its transience, while celebrating the indestructibility of the human soul.

“AN UNTAMABLE DESIRE FOR FREEDOM

The free-spirited Carmen yearns for love, but her unstoppable urge for independence overpowers every other feeling. The obsessive and conservative soldier Don José falls completely under her spell and sacrifices everything he holds dear. When Carmen leaves him for the charismatic Escamillo, the unbearable tension drives them to the limit. Georges Bizet’s Carmen is undeniably one of the masterpieces of the opera repertoire, with captivating melodies and irresistible rhythms that stick in your head for days. Director and choreographer Wim Vandekeybus takes on one of the largest productions that Opera Ballet Vlaanderen has ever staged, with, in addition to the Symphony Orchestra, ten soloists, the entire Chorus and Children’s Chorus, and a whole host of dancers. On the one hand, Vandekeybus works out the deeper psychology of the characters through his characteristic and intense movement language. On the other hand, he uncovers a ritual layer that exposes the intuitive and almost mythological power of the work.”

This week we head into the premiere of OPUS by . You will see us take the basic 16 notes and witness a total of around 2000 notes become embodied…

“Twelve dancers in a virtuoso dialogue with JS Bach
How can looking result in a different way of listening? That question underlies OPUS , the second choreography by Christos Papadopoulos. The starting point is J.S. Bach’s *The Art of Fugue* , which is dismantled and reduced to its most elementary building blocks.
With a microscopically precise movement language and a focus on individual sounds and melodic lines, dancers and musicians piece together the complex puzzle of Bach’s work once again. This growth process unfolds both systematically and organically, allowing us to observe, in a stimulating and surprising way, how music and movement are synchronized.
Especially for the dancers of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, the choreographer is creating a new version of his ensemble piece, thus translating the concept of ‘opus’—defined as ‘a superior and complex work of classical music, realized according to ancient rules and ideals’—in a distinctive way to the present day.” -

RITES (BOLERO X / LA VALSE / LE SACRE DU PRINTEMPS)

“Algerian-French choreographer Nacera Belaza creates La Valse and is flanked in Rites by two musical and choreographic icons. Choreographer Shahar Binyamini opens the triptych with his Bolero X and we conclude with Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps, one of the most iconic rituals ever performed on stage. Pina Bausch created a milestone in dance history with her legendary version of the famous Spring Sacrifice.” -

PREMIERE TONIGHT

“Three orchestral masterpieces become rituals of movement: Ravel’s hypnotic Boléro, his whirling La Valse, and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.
Exactly 100 years ago, Maurice Ravel’s La Valse had its scenic world premiere at the then Ballet of the Royal Flemish Opera in Antwerp. This milestone could not go unrecognised. That is why we asked the Algerian-French choreographer to create a solo based on it. Belaza’s work is known for its ritual character, with an intense interplay between light and darkness. La Valse is flanked in Rites by two musical and choreographic icons. Choreographer opens the triptych with his Bolero X. Binyamini doubles the size of the OBV company with extra dancers. In this way he brings his overwhelming and at the same time poetic and excentric interpretation of Ravel’s enchanting score to life. We conclude with Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps, one of the most iconic rituals ever performed on stage. Pina Bausch created a milestone in dance history with her legendary version of the famous Spring Sacrifice. Barbara Kaufmann, former dancer of the Tanztheater Wuppertal, leads the rehearsals with the dancers of OBV.”
