“Algerian-French choreographer Nacera Belaza creates La Valse and is flanked in Rites by two musical and choreographic icons. Choreographer Shahar Binyamini opens the triptych with his Bolero X and we conclude with Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps, one of the most iconic rituals ever performed on stage. Pina Bausch created a milestone in dance history with her legendary version of the famous Spring Sacrifice.” -

“Three orchestral masterpieces become rituals of movement: Ravel’s hypnotic Boléro, his whirling La Valse, and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.
Exactly 100 years ago, Maurice Ravel’s La Valse had its scenic world premiere at the then Ballet of the Royal Flemish Opera in Antwerp. This milestone could not go unrecognised. That is why we asked the Algerian-French choreographer to create a solo based on it. Belaza’s work is known for its ritual character, with an intense interplay between light and darkness. La Valse is flanked in Rites by two musical and choreographic icons. Choreographer opens the triptych with his Bolero X. Binyamini doubles the size of the OBV company with extra dancers. In this way he brings his overwhelming and at the same time poetic and excentric interpretation of Ravel’s enchanting score to life. We conclude with Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps, one of the most iconic rituals ever performed on stage. Pina Bausch created a milestone in dance history with her legendary version of the famous Spring Sacrifice. Barbara Kaufmann, former dancer of the Tanztheater Wuppertal, leads the rehearsals with the dancers of OBV.”

We have been working for the past months on Pina Bausche’s Le Sacre du printemps , one of the most iconic rituals ever staged. The team, lead by Barbara Kaufmann, with additional assistance by Thusnelda Mercy, Fernando Suels Mendoza, Kenji Takagi, and Tsai-Chin Yu have helped us to step into this bold, difficult, and very meaningful piece. We have been in the studio over the past months preparing for our next triple bill RITES. Up first we’re highlighting LA VALSE.

Exactly 100 years ago, Maurice Ravel’s La Valse had its scenic world premiere at the then Ballet of the Royal Flemish Opera in Antwerp. This milestone could not go unrecognised. A sampling of what dance can be today
In the first part of this double bill, four dancers from our company present their own short choreographies under the name Choreolab. In part two we give the floor to head of the dance répétiteurs Ana Maria Lucaciu and her creation What You Are About To See.
CHOREOLAB
creates the solo Hadal Zone in which we dive into the deepest region of the ocean. There lives a creature that is twisted and vulnerable, shaped by the extremes of the ocean. antoni , in and i’ll bring you flowers, explores the grieving process and the emotional rollercoaster that comes with it. Six characters struggle with the absence that is always present.
In Figures in Flight, reinterprets the myth of Icarus. Inspired by Panamarenko – and with an original sculpture by the celebrated artist on stage – this dance theatre work interweaves homesickness, ambition and failure with a playful mix of humour and melancholy. zero is inspired by geometric or monochrome art. From her new zero point, explores the endless richness within simple lines, shapes and surfaces.
WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO SEE
What happens when you have prepared everything down to the last detail, but nothing goes according to plan? With What You Are About To See, creates a ‘disastrous’ performance on about a world that is completely out of control and inevitably confronts us with the need for adaptability, acceptance, flexibility, humour and the ability to let go.
