NOW OPEN THE JAN FABRE ARCHIVE AND TEACHING CENTRE!
Located within the historic Biblioteca Bernardini di Lecce, the newly opened Jan Fabre Archive and Teaching Centre offers a permanent home for decades of artistic research, performance, and theatre-making. The centre is conceived not only as a repository of artistic heritage, but as a space where future generations of performers, researchers, and artists can engage directly with an evolving body of work.

Accompanying the opening is the exhibition 'BORROWED TIME', curated by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, bringing together more than 200 works, including Jan Fabre’s theatrical drawings and iconic photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe, Helmut Newton, Dirk Braeckman and Jorge Molder.

Together, the archive and exhibition reveal the many layers of Fabre’s artistic universe: a continuous dialogue between body and image, memory and metamorphosis.

NEW EXHIBITION ANNOUNCED | JAN FABRE. BORROWED TIME
Accompanying the opening of the JAN FABRE ARCHIVE AND TEACHING CENTRE, created through the collaboration between Jan Fabre and the Polo Biblio-Museale di Lecce, is the exhibition JAN FABRE. BORROWED TIME, curated by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio.

The exhibition brings together more than 200 works, including Jan Fabre’s theatre drawings alongside theatrical photographs by some of the most celebrated photographers of our time among them Robert Mapplethorpe, Helmut Newton, Dirk Braeckman, and Jorge Molder, artists who, over the years, have captured and interpreted Fabre’s theatre through images of extraordinary depth and intensity.

Through these powerful encounters between photography, drawing, theatre, and visual art, the exhibition reveals the complexity of Fabre’s oeuvre: a continuous dialogue between disciplines driven by an enduring search for metamorphosis and a profound consilience between theatre and the visual arts.

ANNOUNCING THE JAN FABRE ARCHIVE AND TEACHING CENTRE | In the beautiful baroque city of Lecce, Italy, a significant new chapter in contemporary performance and theatrical heritage begins.

Within the historic Biblioteca Bernardini di Lecce, home to internationally renowned collections dedicated to Theatrical Culture and the Performing Arts, including the Carmelo Bene Archive and the Laflis of Eugenio Barba and Julia Varley, we are incredibly proud to announce that the newly established ‘Jan Fabre Archive and Teaching Centre’ now takes its place as a vital centre for theatrical memory, artistic research, and contemporary performance practice.

More than an archive, the Jan Fabre Archive and Teaching Centre will also serve as a living space for artistic transmission and training, dedicated to supporting the next generation of performers.

The programme will include a minimum of two masterclasses each year, beginning with the inaugural session taking place from Monday 25 May to Friday 5 June 2026. Actors and performers from around the world will gather in Lecce for an intensive working session led by Jan Fabre alongside leading performers from Troubleyn/Jan Fabre. The first session will be taught by the exceptional performer Irene Urciuoli.

BEHIND THE SCENES | A beautiful group moment captured at the Troubleyn Laboratorium with Jan Fabre, Eugenio Barba, Julia Varley, Miet Martens, and Johan De Boose during ‘An Encounter with Eugenio Barba’.

Part of Troubleyn / Jan Fabre’s ‘Masters of the 21st Century’ series, the masterclass brought together theatre-makers around Barba’s pioneering vision of performance, shaped by decades of research, intercultural exchange, and the legacy of Grotowski. Founder of Odin Teatret and one of the defining voices in contemporary theatre, Barba, assisted by Varley, continues to inspire generations of performers through their deep commitment to embodied knowledge, artistic rigor, and cultural dialogue.

Guided by renowned acting coach Kimon Fioretos, this masterclass offered structured, experience-based training in the Demidov Organic Acting Technique, a psychotechnical approach to acting developed by the Russian pedagogue Nikolai Demidov. The work explored an alternative foundation for acting, one in which perception, surrender, and subconscious creativity replaced effort, control, and psychological construction.

Participants will work on exercises such as ‘The insect’ (seen here):

'Another important element in the exploration of the insect is the study of asymmetry. A leg can suddenly move in the opposite direction than the direction in which the other legs are moving, different parts of the body can turn at straight angles to carry out a task more efficiently. The performers learn to use all parts of the body as autonomous mechanical parts…’ - Jan Fabre & Luk Van den Dries ( 'From Act to Acting: Jan Fabre’s Guidelines for the Performer of the 21st century')
