SWAN SONGS
The final exhibition of FRED&FERRY

13 September – 13 December 2026
Opening: Sunday, 13 September, 14:00–19:00

After six years, FRED&FERRY will permanently close its doors on 13 December 2026. Swan Songs serves as the gallery’s final exhibition, uniting the fifteen artists currently represented by FRED&FERRY.

For this occasion, each artist has created or selected a work specifically for the exhibition. The exhibition unfolds over three months, tracing the chronology of six years of collaboration—from the gallery’s earliest exhibitions to the present day.

Parallel to this timeline runs a playlist of fifteen tracks, available on Spotify, Tidal, and YouTube. The playlist does not function as a soundtrack but as a secondary parcours through the exhibition: a space for association, memory, and projection. From Radiohead’s N**e and Portishead’s The Rip to Bill Evans’ Peace Piece and LCD Soundsystem’s Dance Yrself Clean, each track accompanies an artist and is released on a specific date during the exhibition’s duration.

Swan Songs is not a retrospective in the traditional sense, but a final collective gesture where artworks, music, and memories temporarily converge before parting ways once more.

A brand-new project — so new it doesn’t even have a name yet — will present a captivating mix of original compositions and carefully selected pieces.

Rein Dufait explores the tension between order and chaos, between visibility and concealment. His work often begins with a structured foundation—lines, planes, systems—that is gradually disrupted by chance, repetition, or intervention. The result is a dynamic interplay of control and liberation, where every layer tells a new story.

His installations and drawings resemble architectural studies, yet they carry a deeply personal, almost organic quality. Time is not linear here; it’s a cyclical dance of building, destroying, and rebuilding.

Hugo De Smaele’s work often starts with a concrete object—a letter, a photo, a document. But what begins as an act of removal quickly evolves into a game of disappearance. He cuts, paints over, and conceals—not to create something new, but to let it cease to exist.

His 16 cm by 19 cm panels are like archaeological layers: each stage of the process carries the traces of what came before, but the final result is a surface where everything merges into a dominant green hue. It’s not about what has vanished, but the fact that it has vanished.

Vincent de Roder’s work stems from a deep fascination with the relationship between humans and their environment. His paintings and objects reflect how we shape spaces—and how those spaces, in turn, shape us. He employs materials and techniques that are both fragile and powerful: from thin layers of paint to delicate constructions of wood and fabric.

His art exudes a quiet urgency. Each brushstroke, each cut into the material, feels like a question: What remains when we strip everything away? The answers aren’t found in absence, but in the traces left behind.

The exhibition brings together four artists:
Rein Dufait,
Sine Van Menxel,
Vincent de Roder
and
Hugo De Smaele.

Their work forms an open dialogue—each retains their own voice, yet together they create a larger, coherent whole. At its core is the way time is woven into their practice: a process of building, adding, overpainting, removing, and repeating. Not as a linear path, but as organic growth, layer upon layer, where each piece is an investigation in itself.

Sine Van Menxel’s oeuvre consists exclusively of analogue photography. She regards the medium as both a technique and a subject. Whether behind the camera or within the darkroom, her attitude is resolutely experimental. For Van Menxel, as for many photographers, the core of the discipline is the manipulation of light and shadow. Yet she takes this a good deal further. So much so, in fact, that the meaning of her work lies more in the visual possibilities that her alternative technique opens up than in the subjects she photographs.

“A photograph can never be a pure registration. Manipulation is inherent to the medium of photography. I like to make my manipulations visible, so that the path a photo has travelled is materialised in the final image”, says Van Menxel. Amongst other things, the artist systematically creates ‘spoelbadcollages’ (rinse bath collages). After her photographs have passed through the development bath, the stop bath and the fixing bath in the darkroom, Van Menxel photographs the test strips and images lying together in the rinsing bath, before hanging them up to dry. They are registrations of the photographs she is working on at that moment and provide a glimpse of the creative process. The ‘spoelbadcollages’, which initially started out as an experiment, are now an essential part of Van Menxel’s practice and have grown into an extensive series within her oeuvre.

Anne Van Boxelaere
Radiant City

The exhibition RADIANT CITY presents Anne Van Boxelaere’s recent work from her series ‘Agreement’, a reflection on the tension between humanity and system, between beauty and control.

The title of the exhibition refers to Le Corbusier’s ‘Ville Radieuse’ (‘Radiant City’), an unrealised modernist urban design from 1930. This visionary plan, intended as a ‘radiant city’ for modern humanity, stands as a symbol of an intensified rational and controlling state apparatus. A nightmarish vision in which order, discipline, and cold efficiency prevail over human warmth and vitality. Le Corbusier’s colleague Hugo Häring described it as a future vision “organised like a Prussian military world: orderly, aligned, disciplined, but cold.”

Anne Van Boxelaere deliberately chooses this title as a counterpoint. Where Radiant City suggests a promise of progress and harmony, she reveals the underlying inhumanity: a world in which systems and rules take precedence, and where beauty and connection disappear into the whirlwind of bureaucracy and administration.
