MEET MERIEM S

We first discovered Meriem S | مريم س through her monthly Roots & Beats radio shows on Refuge Worldwide.
What keeps bringing us back is the way she creates a storyline. Her shows are never simply a collection of good records. She connects sounds from different places, periods and communities, moving through diaspora, dance culture, resistance, healing and memory.

Born in Tunisia, raised in Italy and now based in Berlin, Meriem understands that music can speak more than one language at once. Her selections move freely between soulful, and percussive sounds, dub, disco house and unexpected discoveries.
When we were looking for someone to open for Mr Scruff , we wanted more than a DJ playing warm-up music. We wanted a selector with a strong musical vision. Someone who can build patiently, take us on a journey and surprise us along the way. Someone who understands that the beginning of a night is not something to rush, but a moment to invite people into the story and someone that is playing for the dancers.
As a resident at Refuge Worldwide and saHHara, and co-founder of CALABADDIES, she also works to create more space for underrepresented artists and for people to experience the dancefloor on their own terms.
On September 13, Meriem S will open the story before Mr. Scruff continues it.

Give the music time to unfold.
And allow yourself to be surprised.

What a beautiful day at CIRCLE PARK

Thank you to everyone who came early, stayed late, danced, listened and gave each other space on the dancefloor. Big love to all the dancers, artists and everyone behind the scenes who helped bring this gathering to life.

Moments like this remind us why we keep doing Black Gravity Dance: to bring the focus back to the music and the dancers.

We’re still carrying that feeling with us and we continue on Sunday late afternoon/evening September 13, at HET BOS . when we welcome the legendary Mr Scruff for an extended set, with Meriem S | مريم س opening the evening.

Another long musical journey and another dancefloor we hope to share with you.

See you there.

WHY DO DANCERS MATTER IN THE CLUB?

Because club culture was never only about the DJ. The dancefloor has always been shaped by the people moving on it.

A small correction from one of our previous posts: we wrote that House dance was born in the club. That was too simplistic.

House dance comes from a much longer lineage of Black American & Q***r dance and musical traditions from house parties, basements, underground spaces and community gatherings, to the ways people moved, listened, spoke and created social space together.

Clubs became important places where these histories came together, developed and transformed, but they were not the beginning of everything.

The DJ selects the music, but dancers give it a physical language. They bring movement, exchange, personality and life into the room.

That’s why we want to create more space for dancers.
