ABOUT
En route to Avila, Spain, Carlotta and her enamored New York magazine publisher, Becky, stop-over in Barcelona to visit Andres, Carlotta's estranged artist/husband, for the night. Due to lost luggage their stay turns topsy-turvy while Andrés is attempting to reconcile with Carlotta (on his own chauvinist terms.) Contradictory tendencies and power dynamic innuendoes disclose deep-seated resentments through clever bantering proving that laughter, food, art, and even lust are insufficient in the end. Because Becky and Carlotta's connection has cemented as they continue their journey of inquiry towards uncovering the mystical Saint Teresa of Avila's feminist teachings and their own heart-felt love for each other. Upon their return to Barcelona for their recovered luggage waiting at Andres' home, the three are forced to recognize new truths, and reconcile with the awakening to limiting views. TERESA'S ECSTASY explores a mystical journey of opposing s*xually charged forces looking at love, politics and religion. The setting is Andres' art studio home in Barcelona. Boundaries of culture, gender and language dissolve through the alchemical transcendence of Teresa's mystical wisdom by the end of the play. Through this triangular connection we experience the battle of egos at the expense of female energy that exists both in man and woman. REVIEWS
“Beware of having unintended spiritual epiphanies. Begonya Plaza’s new play, TERESA’S ECSTASY, is about the unexpected influence of Saint Teresa of Avila, a 16th-century Carmelite nun, on modern-day Carlotta, a Spanish writer… The well-written, touching and often funny drama…”
Jennifer Farrar, Associated Press
“…TERESA’S ECSTASY, a sumptuous three-person comic drama about s*x, love and spirituality…”
