Themes: 2SLGBTQIA+ Storytelling with a beautiful focus on Trans, Non-Binary, and Gender Non-Conforming FAM

UNTITLED GIRL NARRATIVE is a Q***r Love story dance musical that spotlights three young people coming of age, embracing their autonomy and power as 2SLGBTQIA+ youth in today’s America. KPC recognizes the need for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth to see themselves and their stories as valuable while the current cultural discourse pushes legislation that threatens the rights of Trans, Gender Non-Conforming, and Non-Binary peoples across America.

UNTITLED GIRL NARRATIVE is increasingly urgent for inclusion and representation of 2SLGBTQIA+ and TGNC persons centered and celebrated in the performing arts industry. This dance musical piece is a three-act dance musical depicting three young people, “X”, “Y”, and “Z”, and their exploration of identity, including gender, orientation, citizen versus immigrant status, showing these young people embracing their power and autonomy, following their journey of self-discovery as they navigate childhood and adolescence in today’s America. Story and Choreography by Katharine Pettit, this new dance musical addresses big questions about how we process harm and hold others accountable for how they might be harming us, intentionally or unintentionally, and how we process and reconcile with a world that does not meet our expectations and ideas about compassion and human decency.

Themes: Collectivism vs. Individuality from a cultural perspective

“El Péndulo” (2026) (The Pendulum) takes place on an imaginary aircraft that transports the audience through an immersive experience featuring improvisational dance. For this opportunity, I propose a fragment of a new piece of choreography titled “El Péndulo.” This project stems from an idea that has become increasingly relevant in our current political climate. Historically, the ‘pendulum’ has swung incessantly from one dominant political perspective to the opposite. These shifts in the predominant political force and socio-economic perspectives are influencing the policies that shape our daily lives and the way we relate to one another. We look at the opposite ends of the pendulum as reflecting our cultural perspectives, ranging from collectivism to individualism. With these ideas in mind, we developed a choreographic score using the image of the oscillating pendulum as the driving force. This 12-minute fragment combines segments featuring solos, duets, and trios, with improvised and choreographed group sections. Dancers explore an array of movement ideas, shifting between actions inspired by profound human emotions and instances of connection and disconnection. This multilayered concept of movement invites diverse choreographic strategies. While the dancers swing, suspend, sway, and vacillate, we invite the audience to stand or walk during the performance, observing the piece from varied perspectives. They are encouraged to get close to the performers at times, appreciating details, connecting with the dancers, and becoming integral parts of the experience.

Themes: Class, Capitalism, and Competition

This duet explores class through the relationship between two fishermen. Allyship, dependency, and trust are tested by scarcity and survival. “That’s not how it works” becomes a refrain of frustration, revealing tension between ambition and necessity. As competition grows, betrayal shows how class can strain solidarity even between those who depend on one another.

Title of Work: filling & pouring & filling
Performers: Natalie Long, Mary Catherine Matthews, Olivia Shirley
Themes: Gender, Mental Health

filling & pouring & filling is a dance about giving to others while setting healthy boundaries. Throughout the piece, dancers learn that they have to take time to refill mentally, spiritually, emotionally and physically (in other words, “you can’t pour from an empty cup”). The piece also explores contemporary gender roles and examines how women are pressured to be endlessly kind, soft and nurturing.

Title of Work: ‘la oscuridd’
Themes: Ability, Education

‘la oscuridad’ is a solo exploration of the darkness within me and all of us that we try to mask and hide from. I recently went on a sobriety journey and within that experience I exposed myself to everything I was hiding from emotionally in my life. The journey of pain and self-realization that comes from ‘taking off the blind’ is what my piece ‘la oscuridad’ is about. In relation to these topics and my personal journey, I believe I incorporate my ability to change and learn more about myself and life through sobriety and creating performance art from my experience.

Title of Work: Sexy 1,2,3
Theme: Sexuality

This piece is exploring the overarching concept of “what is Sexy?”. In the first, movement of the piece, set to Big Spender, the dancer DOES NOT want to be noticed or objectified or the center of attention. She gets cat called by the music and she is really just looking to pass through. In fact, she’d rather be left alone. She takes a comedic approach to this, because she has no idea why anyone would look at her or try to get her attention. This piece is currently in development: the second movement would involve the dancer becoming “possessed” by a sexy demon and would do a very performative version of sexiness. She would be overtly sexy to the point of discomfort for some, because she doesn’t actually believe she is sexy, she is just doing what she thinks that other people think is sexy. The third movement would explore what the dancer actually finds sexy. There would be a gentle quality to the movement and clear inner voice and confidence that shows vulnerability and how she wishes people saw her sexy. The piece focuses on the sexuality and sensuality of the individual. It is not about how the world sees sexy, or what she thinks the world wants in terms of sexy, but how a person can define that for themselves.

Title of Work: Undressed
Performers: Teresa Barr-Mann, Zachary Robinson Zach Robinson
Theme: Sexuality

Undressed depicts the ups and downs in a romantic relationship. The current dancers present as heteronormative, but the piece can be performed by any duet or potentially evolve to have more participants. Part of the work was created through contact improvisation, which allows future iterations of the work to expand upon various types of relationships and romantic connections.

The voice of dance:
No matter your sexuality, relationships are hard! Communication is key to every relationship you have in life and sometimes the hardest reality of a relationship is being able to let it go. In my piece, Undressed, the two characters are romantically involved and are almost naked, exposing their full selves to each other. In the end the male presenting dancer is left in the center alone, still repeating the motif from the first chorus, unable to move past the relationship or being willing to start over.

Title of Work: Seen/Heard
Performers: Juliette Wong, Sara Kowalski
Themes: Class, Education, Race, Ability, Age, Gender, Sexuality- meaningful relationships are created based on the individual person

Seen/Heard is about pushing past the fear of rejection and letting someone in. It’s about finding a person who accepts you for who you are without judgment. The dancers in this duet represent people who, on the surface, present as complete opposites as seen in their movement qualities. The choreography for Seen/Heard is inspired by principles from the Laban/Bartenieff Movement System (LBMS), which links physical movement to psychological states and the idea that how we move reflects our internal state of mind. The dancers’ opposite movement qualities are intended to represent what LBMS would call their “inner attitude.” This piece demonstrates that opposites do, in fact attract, and in doing so create a relationship that is balanced and supportive. The nature of the relationship is unknown to the audience, as is the gender identity and sexual orientation of the dancers, because the relationship between these two people, regardless of who they love or how they identify, is what ultimately matters. When we let our walls down and erase judgments, we allow ourselves to have the opportunity to create relationships we never knew we could have.

A big shout-out to our amazing Third Midnight dance artists, musician, and beloved friends who made the show so special and unforgettable!

We are grateful for all the support and love from our dance community. Thank you to everyone who joined us, shared this experience, and celebrated with us. Your presence and energy made the evening truly meaningful.

As the final June show of 7MPR, it was a beautiful way to come together, honor Pride Month, and celebrate creativity, connection, and artistic expression. We look forward to seeing you again at future performances! ❤️🌈🥚🌺

Dear 7MPR friends, 7MPR’s Third Midnight Performance-Happy Pride Celebration will be this Sunday, June 7th, 8-10pm🌈❤️

The 7MPR Third Midnight-Happy Pride is a celebration of the love, resilience, and power of Pride Month. This performance will be presented in two parts. Part One will feature the first half of the show, showcasing diverse, unique, themed dance works by various dance artists. Part Two will present an 2SLGBTQIA+ storytelling dance musical performed by dance company, Keeping People Connected-KPC!

We believe that supporting the LGBTQIA+ community is a shared global mission among all of us, and we look forward to celebrating together this Sunday. Please Come and Join our SLAY Sunday Dance for this beautiful and powerful month!!
