Part One: Themed Dance

Themes: Class, Education, Race, Ability, Age, Gender, Sexuality- meaningful relationships are created based on the individual person
Seen/Heard is about pushing past the fear of rejection and letting someone in. It’s about finding a person who accepts you for who you are without judgment. The dancers in this duet represent people who, on the surface, present as complete opposites as seen in their movement qualities. The choreography for Seen/Heard is inspired by principles from the Laban/Bartenieff Movement System (LBMS), which links physical movement to psychological states and the idea that how we move reflects our internal state of mind. The dancers’ opposite movement qualities are intended to represent what LBMS would call their “inner attitude.” This piece demonstrates that opposites do, in fact attract, and in doing so create a relationship that is balanced and supportive. The nature of the relationship is unknown to the audience, as is the gender identity and sexual orientation of the dancers, because the relationship between these two people, regardless of who they love or how they identify, is what ultimately matters. When we let our walls down and erase judgments, we allow ourselves to have the opportunity to create relationships we never knew we could have.
