This is why we are marching in the streets:
In a 5-4 unsigned ruling, the Supreme Court just ruled to lift a lower courts ruling that blocked the summery detainment and deportation of those the current administration deems as violent gang members here in the U.S. illegally. This halts a lower courts ruling, handed down by Judge James Boasberg that had previously stated that anyone detained under suspicion of violent crimes, regardless of their immigration status, are owed due process before potential deportation. Boasberg had ordered that those detained be returned to the U.S. for trial, to which the Admin just shrugged and said, "Sorry. We can't do that.". This sparked an escalating verbal conflict that resulted in this monstrous SCOTUS ruling.
There is so much to unpack here that it would make for a wall of text and i am furious. As with any legal finding from SCOTUS, there are multiple ways to interpret where this might go in the future. However, in the short term, this allows ICE to continue to grab whoever they want off the streets and ship them out of the country. Those individuals may likely never be seen again.
Where my concern and outrage lies is that none of these individuals are proven to be gang members or violent criminals. Ice is just grabbing anyone with brown skin. It does not matter if they are undocumented, have green cards, are here under asylum, or possibly even naturally born citizens. At first, Tattoos were given as evidence of gang membership, but when the individuals and their tattoos where shown in the news, it was clear that having a Tattoo proved gang membership in the same way that listening to rock music proved you were a satanist in the 80's. And...it wasn't long after this that videos emerged of ICE breaking the car windows of old ladies and dragging them away. Was Grandma in Tren De aragua?
Detained individuals are then held briefly without contact and then put on a plane to El Salvador where we...with taxpayer money...are paying to incarcerate these individuals. All so that the Trump Admin can look like tough on crime.
As the father of a young man of who is a naturally born citizen who happens to be of Mexican descent...and who has a couple tattoos, this scares the hell out of me and makes me lose sleep at night. However, it should scare the hell out of us all because everyone is at risk.
Let me be clear about this...They don't care who they are grabbing. They are not being made to prove any crimes or even checking the legal status of those detained. That should make all our blood run cold. If they don't have to prove anything, then they can grab anyone. That's you....that's me. This is an unamerican as it gets and believing that is not being soft on crime. This is not a Republican versus Democrat issue. Being given due process is what we would all hope for ourselves if accused of a crime....A trail with proof provided, legal counsel to defend us, and consequences that are reasonable and accountable.
This is the moment when we need to stand up. This is why we are marching in the streets and demanding that Trump and his Administration stop dismantling the systems that support our way of life as Americans. You can get mad about tariffs...and we should...but this overstep of authority should send ice into the heart of every American. We need to stand up against this before there is no one left to defend us.
