Smart Agriculture: The Use of Drone and IoT Technology
Introduction
Agriculture is the backbone of our economy, but climate change, labor shortages, shrinking farmland, and rising costs are challenging traditional farming. To solve this, farmers worldwide are turning to Smart Agriculture, where drone and IoT technology help produce more, better-quality crops at lower cost.
What Is Smart Agriculture?
Smart agriculture uses modern technology to collect real-time data on land, weather, soil, crop health, and water needs. This helps farmers decide when to irrigate, fertilize, or treat pest infestations.
Uses of Drone Technology
1. Crop Monitoring: High-resolution cameras and sensors on drones capture images of entire fields quickly, revealing weak crops, water shortages, or disease.
2. Spraying and Fertilizing: Drones spray pesticides and fertilizer precisely, reducing waste and protecting workers from toxic chemicals.
3. Land Surveying: Drones map land topography and soil types, helping plan irrigation for large farms.
4. Seed Sowing: Modern drones now sow seeds directly, especially in hard-to-reach fields.
Uses of IoT Technology
1. Smart Irrigation: Soil sensors measure moisture and automatically control irrigation, cutting water waste.
2. Weather Stations: IoT weather stations track temperature, humidity, rainfall, and wind, alerting farmers via mobile apps.
3. Livestock Management: IoT trackers monitor livestock health, location, and activity for early disease detection.
4. Storage Management: IoT sensors control warehouse temperature and humidity, preserving crop quality and reducing waste.
Prospects and Challenges in Bangladesh
Prospects: affordable drones and sensors for small farms, expanding mobile networks bringing IoT to rural areas, and growing agri-tech startups.
Challenges: high setup costs, lack of training, unreliable internet and electricity, and complex drone regulations.
Conclusion
Drone and IoT technology are set to revolutionize agriculture. With the right policies, training, and infrastructure, Bangladeshi farmers can achieve higher yields at lower cost through sustainable, eco-friendly farming.
